A possible new chase ride

Well, as some of you know, I've had my yellow Nissan Frontier since 01. It currently has 142,000 miles on it and it runs great. I've been thinking about a new chase vehicle only if I think I can get a great deal. I think I may have found one. I came upon an 08 Nissan Xterra here in Amarillo while browsing the net. It's color is "red alert" and it has 16,700 miles on it. It's an S model with 4 wheel drive. It's price is $17,900. I'm sure I can get them down to 17,500 or possibly lower. This price of $17,900 is about 2,000 below Kelly blue book value, so I think it's a pretty darn good deal. I actually haven't seen it in person yet, but I'm going tomorrow. It's only 4 miles from my house. I forgot to mention that it does have a warranty. So, is this really a good deal or not? I think it is...

Here is a link if you're interested XTERRA

I think it's missing parts man. Like... a lightbar, antennas, anemometer

Don't forget to print that ad and get your free tank of gas!

I brought myself a 2004 4x4 Xterra last month. Actually in South Africa it's called an X Trail, but's its the same vehicle. I'm loving it. It's a great SUV.

I cant comment on the US price, but it looks like standard market value. I'd be wary of a bright red vehicle though.

Hiya Jason. After chasing with you and Jay last year in KS. I finally made it to ST...Before I bought my dakota, I really looked at the XTerra. I like the skid plates and options on the XTerra. I really dont think you could go wrong with this. I agree with David. The only thing you are missing is the do-dads, whirlygigs, and antennas.:D

I like it! It seems to be a good deal with relatively low mileage and being a 2008. 4 wheel drive is great. "Red Alert" is a great color!! You could always call it "Tornado Watch Red". ;-) I'll certainly miss seeing that distinctive yellow Nissan frontier in the inflow. However, I think the Xterra would be MUCH harder for you to fall out of the back. LOL!!! :p Holler at me sometime so I can swing by and take a look at it and drool.

Looks like a great ride, start the bid low $16000 also remember they are more willing to deal on or about the last day of the month, always a risk to wait but usually pays off.

As a chase vehicle I like Xterras. I own one and chased with it last year. I loved being able to have the 4wd, got me over those slick muddy Kansas roads. As long as your not much bigger than 5'8" then you could sleep in it too. Helps cut down on those hotel expenses. If you have any questions about owning an xterra give me a pm.

Haggle, Haggle, Haggle.

I'm with some of the others....man...haggle them down low....look around, and compare prices both at dealers and on the street. Have a few print outs in hand when you go, so you prove you did the research.

Dealers are hurting for business, so they are willing to work with you....unless it's one of those "no haggle" dealerships.

Don't be afraid to walk out on a negotiation if you don't get the price you want. More and likely, they'll call you (be sure they have your number at the beginning, before negotiations take place) with a better deal. Depending on the difference, take that deal, or haggle a little...sometimes they won't budge from there, but it's always worth it trying.

Also, know where you want to be if you financing any of this. I bet you'll be paying cash for the truck, but if financing, get approval and rates before final negotiations.

Good Luck man....seems reasonable to me. I'm not a huge fan of the Xterra, but I don't see many issues with them either....seen a few of them out on the road. I know Scott M. uses one.

Jason, looks like a good deal! Might be worth it to do a CarFax lookup on it though for peace of mind.... just in case.

I would definitely reccomend a vehicle history on a used one. The XTerra's get high reliability marks from Consumer Reports, which is a bit strange (in a good way) for an SUV. If you can get a price you like and the vehicle history is clean, no reason not to go for it.

Make sure that Mike Theiss did not own it previously. Inside joke there for those who would get that....

Good luck- seems like a good ride if you're not going with a Tahoe :-)

Don't just look at Kelly Blue Book values, also look at the NADA and Edmunds True Market Value. Often time KBB is thousands of dollars different than the NADA or Edmunds values. Take the lowest of the 3 to the dealership and don't pay any more than that, period.

I looked at Edmunds, and it had it listed at $20,152. So, the dealer price is still about 2-3 thousand dollars less than Kelly and Edmunds.
