9/29/07 REPORTS: KS/NE/SD/CO/NM

Short on time at the moment, but just tossed these online. First is just the tiny severe storm at North Platte. It got to rotating pretty good right before it died.

Some lightning later along the lake sw of North Platte.

It was damn windy, and the waves were pretty big. The dock was moving up and down a bit from the waves.

I didn't have long on the dock before it started to rain. So shot a few from inside the car out the windshield. Works pretty well as long as it's not a heavy rain.

I made the long trip from Wichita to far NW Kansas to try and catch some action up there. I knew I did not have much of a chance for diurnal activity with the late timing of this sytem, but I had to chase! It will be freezing cold and snowing before too long. I did capture a few images of a severe warned storm before dark west of Sharon Springs, KS. Then I traveled back north and chased a couple of bow echoes in Sherman and Thomas Counties after dark. I did not see any hail at all. The most intense activity I witnessed were 50-55mpn winds in Colby, KS.

I chased the leading edge of the monster squall from Cheyenne Wells, CO out to Sharon Springs, KS. Actually, IT chased me! Storms kept back-building across southeast CO into western KS screaming northeast at 50mph, so once I got ahead of the main storm along the CO/KS border after it lined out staying ahead of it was no easy task but made for some incredible photo ops!

Took this from Cheyenne Wells (15 miles west of the KS border) at 7:10pm. I tripoded the camera, aimed northwest & took 10-15 sec. exposures as the lightning became constant. I was near the apex of the surging squall, right before the storm caught up with me.

Awesome striations, one of the most electrified shelf clouds I've ever seen!

What a phenomenal storm...I'll have more photos & a couple videos (including one time lapse) posted on my site in the next couple days.

Lightning just south of N.Platte

I realized that I wasn't going to be able to keep up with the storms as I raced from McCook to N.Platte. After a bit of driving and waiting, I didn't want to go home empty handed so I caught these lightning shots from a gas station parking lot as the cells raced by.
