I've had a decent summer so far tagging some strong/severe storms here in Southwest Virginia, and haven't really posted a report yet, so tonight I thought, aw, what the heck. With CAPE of 1000-1500, moderately steep lapse rates, and afternoon deep-layer shear of about 30 knots, responding to a weak upper-level disturbance, I kept my eyes open, and finally moved to an elevated viewing spot as a severe-warned bowing line segment moved toward the Roanoke Valley a little after 6 p.m. I watched the outflow boundary blow over the valley, and got several shots similar to the one above. The most intense part of the line segment was moving to the south, so I raced south and essentially core-punched it, getting some pea-sized hail and frequent close CGs out of it. A little farther south, there was widespread wind damage to trees.
