Several tornadic storms pushed through the Western New York area this afternoon. Several tornadoes have been reported, with damage in the Mayville and Randolph areas. Reports of trees down in the Mayville area, unfortunately trapping an Amish family in their buggy. Also reports of damage to homes and many large trees down across the areas.

I will say that personally, the local radio station that 'I was listening to NEVER broke into their programming to pass along the tornado warning... which we had two of. The Randolph area is not far from my home at all, and I must say, it was QUITE frightening. My daughter andI spent about 5 minutes in the bathtub with pillows and blankets.

This storm is still tornadic, and another warning was issued form north central PA just now.

An EF2 tornado has been confirmed in Chautuaqua County and it passed over lake Chautuaqua. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/buf/products/072510pns.htm

That is interesting since I have been there and I can just picture the tornado moving over the lake which is a descent size lake. I know people do live near the lake. The towns of Mayville and Dewittville was hit. Good thing nobody was hurt that I know of. The NWS survey said the tornado touched down multiple times. Would this not make it multiple tornadoes?

There are some rather spectacular photos of the tornado as it passed over the lake. Right now I think there is discussion as to whether the Mayville tornado was the same that hit Dewittville and Maple Springs, or if they were separate. My guess is separate... have to wait and see. Will have to see how they evaluate the situation in Randolph as well. The photos I've seen certainly point more to tornado damage rather than just straight line winds. Trees are twisted around and sidewalks pulled up. Again, have to wait and see.

EDIT: I just read the report... should have before I posted. It appears they are calling this one tornado... still be interesting as there was reports of another touchdown in the Mayville area.

The survey calls it one tornado but also mentions it touched down multiple times. I always thought that would make it more then one tornado but maybe not if it was all from the same funnel cloud. Thanks for the link to the video and I am glad to hear your family is fine.

I know that part of New York rarely sees tornadoes this strong. I remember one time driving between Oneonta and Coopersville in the mountains and seeing a path where trees were flattened in the same direction down one of the mountains. I was told it was a tornado. It is always interesting to hear about tornadoes in western New York since I have been there many times.

Edit: The user who uploaded the video says "Storm touches down in Chautauqua County". I think that is just a mistake on his part.
