While driving back to Boston from Burlington, Vermont yesterday, we unexpectedly did an old fashioned (no data, looking at the sky only) chase in Vermont and New Hampshire yesterday. Driving S on Rt. 7 out of Burlington, the cu's began to build and around 4:10 pm, the cap broke. With temps in the low 90's and dews up to 70, no surprise. The only surprise for us was the development of a supercell right in front of us as we wended our way through the mountains (and trees). By 5 pm, it was putting down inch size hail and a bit later, a wall cloud developed as we got to the junction of Rt. 7 and I-89 in White River Junction on the border of VT/NH. Of course, this thing could have been dropping anything out of the sky and unless it dropped something right on top of you, the mountains, trees and road networks wouldn't let you see a thing. It took up quite some time to see the base. One of the photos is from the car while driving on I-89 at 75 mph as a small gap in the trees occurred. A nice accidental chase - going totally visual.
