5/10/08 NOW: KS/OK/MO/AR

Many trees and power lines reported down in Stuttgart. Some people trapped in houses. Gas leaks. Dollar store collapsed. Other stores also damaged. Troopers going house to house checking them now. If any chasers are there with additional details, please let NWS know.

I'm starting to get some reports relayed to me (third hand) on the tornado in SE Kansas (one that hit Picher OK). Apparently it was about a quarter to half mile wide and fairly strong. This is really shakey information though, so don't take it too seriously.

Adding to what Mikey said the Pitcher tornado appears to be EF3-4 damage with 20 blocks heavly damaged or destroyed. Some reports also indicate about a half mile wide. They are still finding victims at this time.

I filmed the Picher tornado on I44 looking north and will have video up in the morning as I have to work tonight. The town of Picher is heavily damaged with a path of a 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. Five confirmed fatalities already and I witnessed two of the fatalities being loaded up in the back of an ambulance. I am a bit shook up right now, esp. since I live in Miami only about 5 min. from Picher. I too would estimate EF-3 damage and the damage path was at least a 1/2 mile and possibly wider close to 3/4 of a mile. St Johns hospital in Joplin is inundated with patients at this time. Very tragic scene in Picher right now. It is complete chaos right there now. Some homes were leveled all the way to the foundation. There were at least 3 medical helicopters there at one time helping to transport victims back to the hospital.

I heard EF3-4 damage too Robert, but I wasn't going to say anything because I don't know how reliable the information is. It also looks like there are 11 confirmed dead now from this storm.

In Clarksdale, MS, saw big high signs down, a few trees and and it was companied by tons of power flashes in a central area of town. They had US 49 blocked and had to use county 161 to get around the high way!

The death toll from tornadoes overall this year is horrendous. Today alone is almost incomprehensible. I guess the nature of the storms today was such that the threat to life was greater somehow. It's hard to think about and try to understand why things happened this way today.
