Woke up this afternoon (I work overnight) and saw that there were a few warnings out by Topeka so I hopped in the Camry and headed East about 25 miles to see what I could find.
I got to the storms right about the time the warnings were dropped on them. The (previously) tornado warned storm didn't look majestic at all, that's for sure. Probably the least photogenic storm in history. While I was driving along I-70 I could of swore I saw a little funnel off in the distance....but there was no way to really tell it was so far away. Maybe it was my imagination.
When the storms started to die down, I decided to head over to Maple Hill, KS because I heard there was some flash flooding going on in that area. Sure enough...they had Hgwy 30 shut down for about a mile or two. I drove around town for a little while and stopped to talk to some police officers that were blocking the road.
One of them was a storm chaser himself and when I mentioned the word "tornado" he whipped out his camera phone and showed me a few pictures of the tornado that touched down earlier today by Maple Hill. He said he just stood on his front porch and watched it for awhile. They received about three inches of rain down there in a pretty short period of time...
Here are a couple of photos of the flooding around town:
It wasn't that bad, definitely not life threatening. The police actually said people were trying to water ski around the house in the last picture, lol.
I then stopped and got a Mountain Dew and headed home. It wasn't too exciting, but it was a pretty good waste of an hour and a half
