4/17/09 REPORTS: TX/OK/KS/CO

Juston Drake and I documented a short-lived supercell storm in Southwest Oklahoma. We documented multiple wall cloud occlusions and some nice gustnadoes east of Hollis along SR 62. We saw a cone funnel develop from nice meso occlusion northeast of Hollis,OK, but no touchdown or tornadic circulation was observed at the surface. There may have been a very shallow stable layer at the surface that prevented this storm from producing any tornadoes. Beautiful storm!

Simon

Sorry guys; I corrected the date...

4/17/09 Knox County storm

I think Simon may have meant 4/17 so ill post here...what little there is to report. Was hoping to get a cell form down in Knox county and I did...just formed a bit too late in the day I guess. Decent LP structure at times but never became severe. Did some timelapse which should look ok. Pics and video on the websites of the past couple days will be up at the websites.

Yeah, it's 4/17/09. No sweat Simon. ;-)

Wild action in SW OK today. I was trying to get east of Hollis under a rapidly rotating wall cloud when I encountered three intense little vorticy circulations on the east side of town within 50 yards of me (it was tense to say the least for a few moments). Although I thought at first they were gustnadoes, I'm convinced they were not. They were intense, very narrow, and moving NNE with the the parent storm. They also would dissipate just as rapidly as they would spin up. All of this under an organized strongly rotating wall cloud with tight, rapid rotation directly overhead. Thanks to the hundreds of tumbleweeds getting sucked into them, the vortices were easy to identify. :-)

I then saw a nice funnel form NE of Hollis and certainly looked like it would come down, but didn't. I did note some tight rotating rain curtains underneath it though, but no "debris".

Here are some pics, although they were processed on my laptop, so the quality might not be the best. I've got some better video which I'll post when I get back in town in a couple of days.

Funnel cloud just after it began lifting.

Nice rotating wall cloud as it begins to occlude. Hopefully you can see the "nub"

One last attempt...a weak funnel cloud.

Big kudos to Jay McCoy for updating me on the status of my stream as it kept cutting out because of crappy cell connectivity.

We stayed on the storm that formed late in Knox County, Texas, for a little while. Like Jason said... LPish, decent looking structure. Other than that, nothing really but some heavy rain and nice lightning. These two days have been rough... Can't wait for next weekend though :)

Johnny Hall and I were on the Hollis, OK Supercell shortly after initiation. We watched it cycle through several nice wall clouds as it moved North very slowly toward Hollis. After repositioning on Hwy 62, 1 mile east of Hollis, it finally produced a short lived (multi vortex?) tornado just east of Hollis. We reported it to 911 emergency services but, the storm was never warned and the report apperantly never went through. This was likely the same tornado that was witnessed by Steve Miller. Afterwords, we followed it North as it produced several more rapidly rotating wall clouds, wrapping rain curtains, and a few funnels but, no tornadoes.

4th picture is of the tornado.
