4/24/07 NOW: OK / TX / KS

Jeremy Wilson and I have been all over creation today. We started just outside Wichita Falls, TX. We are currently heading West out of Fort Worth, TX towards a cell with rotation on it just North of Lipan, Texas. 65dbz with 50k tops and rotation on all levels. Currently on the road, but will post more later.

I've been watching SW Oklahoma for the last several hours and it is evident that cu has been persistently trying to form in an area that has experienced good heating since early-mid afternoon. Additionally, the dryline has now been stationary and may be retreating some. Temperatures have been quite warm in the dry sector with 84 over 37 being reported at Frederick during the latest observation. Additionally, the previously cooled and dried moist layer from afternoon convection has been warming/moistening back up again. surface convergence seems to really be increasing as well, with winds backing quite healthily now from Wichita Falls up to Duncan and north toward OKC and all along the dryline into KS. If the dryline is sloshing back west the moist air may be migrating into the earlier dry air that was heated decently. Wichita Falls is 75 over 63, wind SE @ 12.Tough call as to whether or not a cell can fire here. If it would it may have a narrow, but expanding instability axis to work with to the N-NNE. Last night's 4km wrf did show storms, in the form of supercells, initiating vicinity of the dryline (I-35 corridor on run) after 00z. If storms can fire before the cold front overtakes the dryline I believe discrete supercells will be possible. The main question deals with whether or not this will be the case, and if so, when.

Just got off the phone with Alex Lamers and Sam Dienst. They are following the tornado warned supercell in NW Rice County, KS. They reported to me that they saw a wall cloud associated with the storm. It has weak rotation but it might be just now trying to get it's act together. One good thing about this storm is it's southern extent is isolated by about 10 - 15 miles from the storm to it's south. With this seperation, it might be able to continue developing it's rotation.

Wall Cloud

We had a wall cloud 3 miles East of Lorraine, KS for about ten minutes, but it just fell apart. Heading south towards Lyons, KS.

Streamed the wall cloud live on our netcast. Very exciting.

About 30 different chasers here in this county!

Reno County KS EOC asking storm spotters to keep an eye on a storm north of Plevna in Reno County for possible rotation. Not showing up good on my radar though.

Anyone else notice the monster right-mover just south of Eagle Pass across the Mexican boarder? It is currently producing one of the most pronounced hooks i have ever seen.

Got the FSU crew headed SW on 67/367 to the newly tor warned cell in Brown County...radar signature looks great..maybe the best looking discrete cell in the warm sector outside of the storm near Eagle Pass.

Eagle Pass storm is now tornado warned and crossing into Texas. It appears that an occlusion occurred a little less than an hour ago while the storm was in Mexico. The storm has been producing a VERY well defined hook since then. I'm willing to bet there is or will be a tornado on the ground very soon.

I am back in Wichita Falls from the Bowie area after giving up on the basic "crapvection" stuff in the DFW area. Things there look a little better than earlier but looks like the "real supercells" of the day are gonna be from Brownwoon down towards Sonara.
Yes the Eagle Pass monster is there once again. There always seems to be a great cell down there on big days like this as well as some days when little is forecast. I am surprised there isnt a tornado warning on it. Earlier it had two hooks and has the classic "flying eagle" look. Maybe they named it Eagle pass for thsi reason? ;-)

EDIT: Tornado warning for Eagle pass storm....too bad nobody will be there to post pics on ST later :-(
I am waiting to see if something can indeed refire along the dryline in SW OK or Western North Texas but it looks like a no go. Maybe after 9pm we can get something for some lightning pics? No CU here locally.
I hate high risk days......give me a low end moderate or high end slight any day with ISOLATED cells.

Tornado reported on the ground near Eagle Pass. The storm is still looking very impressive on radar.

Edit: Laughlin Air Force Base radar just went out.

Streaming coverage of Kansas storm KSN.COM NBC

Is anyone getting www.SevereStudios.com live feed? It keeps saying its offline when I try to Load it.

Actually reports from that area are bumper to bumper traffic but local news says it may be more locals (who should be seeking shelter) watching than actual chasers.

Wow check out the nice flying eagle that just went through Piedras Negras, TX. Storm is showing signs of strong rotation. I'm sure there probably won't be any tornado reports due to the lack of population out there. Nice text book shape though.
