2026-03-10 EVENT: IL/IA/MO

Storm seems to have re-established a connection with the warm air, inflow screaming north into the meso now. But air is very cold. Looks like very cold lake breeze (in the 40sF) is mixing in. Thinking storm may be able to ramp up again soon.

Got a small rotating wall cloud in one of the western storms, but it didn’t convert to a tornado.
I think we were a little bit on the wrong side of the temperature boundary so there was a cold layer on the surface. There was a ~15°F temperature difference a short drive apart.

Mass casualty event declared for Kankakee IL and Lake Village IN. First responders have closed off Lake Village. Some homes reportedly swept away completely.

Sorry to have to report that the warning for Kankakee was very poor:

Very unfortunate to hear about injuries/ potentially deaths with today's tornadoes. Hope everyone chased safely today, and congrats to those who caught what they were hunting for.

I picked up the storm from El Paso and shadowed it east; I didn't personally see the tornado near Pontiac but I was right on the storm (well, me and about two hundred others). The movement on that wall cloud was absolutely wicked as it went north of town.

I went around Pontiac and ended up stopping northeast of Emington. The storm didn't seem to have much going on at that time, about twenty miles out of Kankakee. I saw what liked like maybe some outflow features, and between that and what seemed a lack of overall activity, I decided to start on my five hour drive home.

It wasn't half an hour later that I heard "large and destructive tornado" on the radio from the storm I had just left, having followed it all that way. Turning back wasn't an attractive option, as I wanted to get a jump in front of the northwestern storms before they reached I-39 (they ended up beating me there anyway).

Needless to say, I'm a little bummed over this one from a chase perspective, but I really feel for those affected. I made it home safely- to an in tact home- and that's the most important part.
