With the historic drought along much of the west coast and especially California - it's been a crummy chase season for post frontal severe weather in California's Central Valley. However, Wednesday's setup may provide a chase opportunity. A negatively tilted cold core trough will be passing over northern California early Wednesday morning. Afternoon sunbreaks (leading to 250-500 CAPE), cold temperatures at 500 (-24 to -26 degrees C) along with 40 to 60 knots of bulk shear could potentially support rotating updrafts in the Sacramento Valley. The models are suggesting the best chance of this will be south of Chico and along the Sierra Nevada foothills where there will be orographically backed winds. Unfortunately that's in the land of hills, trees and not many roads. I'm going to keep an eye on things - I may make the 3 hour drive south and check things out.
