2/17/08 Winter Storm NOW: KS/MO/IA/NE/WI/IL

In Overland Park (KC suburb), we moved over from sleet to moderate snow as of 6am, we already have a quick 1/2" of snow here and the flakes are growing ever larger. This is a full 2-3 hours earlier than the models had showed the switch-over. Given this situation..we may be getting more than the 4" forecasted.

Wow what a storm..Huge rain shield over IL and a heavy snow swath over IA and WI. Here in RFD we have had Mod /HVY rain and as a result and expected Flood Warnings are up as flooding is occuring esp in the streets where drains are clogged by ice and and in low lying areas..
Looks like the dry slot is pushing northward and shows up excellent in WV imagery so some will see a break then get in on the wrap around snow later..but the main Winter show will be in IA and SW WI..

Still holding on to moderate snow...1.5" on the ground now and there is still about 2-3 more hours of snowfall on the way.

Here in St. Joseph, MO the roads are VERY slick with heavy wet snow. I would guesstimate that we have about 3" so far based on the tracks that I made with my truck on my unplowed road here in town. Another couple of inches are definitely possible before it ends. I will guess we end up with 5" of wet snow.

Snow is melting so hard to get a good measure...am estimating 2.5" here so far. Back edge of the snow shield should be out of here in next 2 hrs.

About 0.3" of ice and 31 deg here. Looks like the dry slot is trying to work it's way in..with that and warming temps..that will probably be the extent of the icing. Will be watching the lake effect side of this storm beginning tonight through Tuesday as forecast parameters appear outstanding with plenty of moisture to work with and non existent low-level inversion and favorable wind direction/speed.

Very odd snow event that had melting of snow being quicker than accumulation...the total I am estimating was between 3-3.5" here in OP. Temps. have warmed and major snow melt is well underway. Roads are just wet...and slushy in spots.

Got 1.3" of rain here. Just changed over to snow a few hours ago but it's too warm to stick with this anemic rate of snowfall. Water is standing all over the place. Still about 7" of VERY wet snow on the ground. The rain has compacted it down a few inches.

Storm has come to end here in eastern Wisconsin. Significant QPF here. We received 0.28" of freezing rain at the start and finished with the significant deformation zone total of 7.0" of snow. Pressure dropped as low as 986.0 mb MSLP, which isn't even the lowest pressure in 2008. The parade of strong storms gave us a 985.7 mb MSLP in January. Snow cover is about 20"
