09/27/2009 REPORTS: MI, IN, IL

Nice shots Kurt! I am surprised more (esp N IL/IN) haven't added to this thread. Though all the decent action was well N of my location, I stepped out to cloud watch in NW Macon County IL on the advancing squall line that lacked any type of squall. Besides general SDS relief (last event was 08/19), I wanted to play with shooting low light situation and catching cloud with minimal available light. Using settings of ISO 800 (high sensitivity), F8.0 (increased DOF), it worked though I should have upped the exposure compensation a notch and not have to do so in PS. Non-events are great opportunity to work out difficult settings and esp. for not owning the fastest equipment. Report w/pics can be found on my BLOG.

Guess I'll chuck in my two cents, plus the only decent lightning shot I got.

I chased with Kurt, and we set up our cameras on a stairway down to the beach north of Holland. The location was Kurt's idea, and it turned out to be a great one. The lightning display out over Lake Michigan wasn't the most spectacular I've ever seen, but it certainly provided plenty of photo ops. Unfortunately, when I got home, I found that my focus hadn't been as good as I'd hoped, making cropping out of the question.

One shot did turn out okay--blurred, but since it didn't need to be significantly cropped, the fuzziness isn't that objectionable. The view is looking north toward Grand Haven.
