05/22/08 NOW: CO/NE/WY/KS/OK/TX

We've seen an elephant trunk tornado approx 2 miles north of Beeler, KS at 7:55, tornado lifted shortly after visual, unable to relay to NWS....

Currently tracking a rotating wall cloud.

Depending on which radar you look at, there could be some strong rotation in the rain/hail headed for the Wakeeney, KS, area. Goodland NEXRAD suggests strong cyclonic and anticyclonic rotation. Dodge City NEXRAD is much less impressive, but still shows rotation. Both radars are sampling the meso above 7000-8000ft.

We just got about a 1/2 mile to a mile east of Wakeeny when we got blasted by rotating rain curtains. I'm seriously freaked out. There were chasers behind us. We saw a large truncated cone touchdown about 5 miles SW of WaKeeny before it became rain wrapped. This is not good.

Strong inflow into an area of rotation in NW Blaine Co OK apparent on the phased array. Wouldn't be shocked to see a TOR resurrected on that cell at some point; it's till 79/69 in Kingfisher.

Doug, its hard to see whats going on - even with the L2 superres data. Goodland NEXRAD makes it seem like an area of rotation just passed over the city, similar to your account. Dodge City NEXRAD doesn't show it as ominous, and instead shows rotation further south. Both sites showed a weakening trend of the rotation as it neared town. It's a safe bet to assume that there was at least some strong westerly winds coming out of that storm - maybe there was a microburst - the easterly component could explain by GLD picks it up but DDC doesn't. I hope for Wakeeney's sake that it wasn't a big rain wrapped tornado.

I'd be worried about the cell in Custer County too. Living in about 80-81/67-68 environment right now per OK Mesonet. Has an interesting little BWER and hook showing up and its moving east-southeast now per radar. It should at least set down some very strong winds and some massive hail.

Agreed. It's fun being able seeing the cells' rotation pulse up and down every few minutes- ya gotta love the phased array. Also, massive Tornado Watch 339 has been issued, valid through 500CDT; it encompasses roughly 60k mi^2!

EDIT: There was quite a little couplet a scan or so ago over WC Blaine County. If that's accurate, I'd say there could have been a brief spinup associated with this developing circulation. This is a very interesting situation to watch; it appears as though three or four distinct supercells have been trying to develop out of this mass of storms in C OK. The phased array VIL image is very telling.

KFOR insisting the new TOR watch include the OKC Metro area due to the more eastward movement the southern supercell is now taking.

It does appear they should have inclded I-40 and northward. Latest scans even show an almost SE movement to the cells.

OKC is on the edge of the watch, which I think satisfies the "in and close to" wording. Either way... the local NWS office can add a few counties if it looks like the storms might move outside of the watch box more than a slight bit.

As much as I was excited by that southern storm at first, its just not really getting going as I thought it might. Now that storm headed for Henneseey, OK, has my attention.

GR2Analyst now has a TVS, when using the Vance AFB NEXRAD. Looks to be going HP in type and I dont see any chasers on spotternetwork in a position to see anything.
