Off topic I know, but just in case you or others are still curious about this event, I found the storm reports here:

As you can see, the event you are recalling had no fatalities, but there were 3 injuries with this F2 tornado. Perhaps you heard a false news report.

I had thought I rembered hearing about some deaths from that event, but I do remember someone getting hurt even when the day did not start out like the typical severe weather day.
