Your Best Lightning Shot of 2008?

This is by far my best picture of the year, and one of the best lightning pictures I've ever taken.

Steve - love your shots! I think the twilight lightning shots are always nice, lots of colors.

2008 is definitely my best lightning year to date.

May 31 near Binger, OK with ground-scraping wall cloud.

Great pictures guys and gals ( watch out for the new 600 pixel rule. )

Lightning is always unique but its even better getting storm structure or a hit in the picture.

I am curious what lightning strike scenario is on your list of want to haves?

I still have a few lightning wishes.

Sunrise
Sunset
Moon
Tower Strike
Daylight

The closest I have some to my sunrise, sunsets and day times are theses:

(click any for larger)

Sunrise:

Sunset: (under the stars and moonlit )

Daytime:

Tower strike: (sadly semi-illusion only)

And by all means if you haven't done so good this year throw out your best ever as well.

Mine: (2007)

If you can't tell yet lightning brought me to weather photography.

WOW....some VERY nice shots on here. I feel almost ashamed to post mine after looking at some of these lol. Anyway, here are my favorites so far this year. I'm still hoping for a close one.

Nothing spectacular yet, but I have all summer.

These are some stunning photographs, folks! But the big question is, HOW??? Jim, what kind of exp? aperture? Are you using a ND filter? Any info provided would be greatly appreciated, as my lightning shots are definitely hit/miss...

Havent really tried to capture any this year. Thats all I used to shoot, but been to busy, and when I do go out the lightning will just suddenly cease. But in this picture you can see the tornado in the mass mess... bottom central.

Well, after another night of lightning photography, and over 50 keepable shots I now have not only some of my best shots of the season, but my best shots ever. Here are 3 of my best for tonight.

Trial and error.

More distant lightning may require as much light as you can get and if its getting close then you will want to close it down. I had a burnout at f11 tonight. What I can tell you is that lightning in the rain is brighter when close and some times dimmer when distant and will need to be adjusted for, its also not as clear. I am using no filters. Manual focus and focused at infinity is needed. Tripod and a cable release are a must.

Yep Chris your getting better... Nice shots.

Melanie, at night I use aperature from 2.8-4.5. If I'm shooting in the general direction of some street lights, building with lights on, etc, I'll use 4.5 or aound there. It helps to be using a digital camera to be able to review the pictures you've taken. Also, I'll take pictures for no longer than 30 seconds.

I must say when Steve Miller posted those photos on the reports thread for that date it really dropped my jaws! Stunning.

One of these for me, not sure.

From left, near Ottawa, KS - Jun 3... Tonkawa, OK - May 24... Marble Falls, TX - May 9

Man coming back to the wet & windy southern hemisphere winter sure is depressingly sour, lol

I finally found this picture again. I noticed this picture on flickr and this is why I need a 10mm lens and how luck can play a big part in a great shot. This is one of my favorite lightning shots (not mine). I love the 3d look.

Well I havent really tried to get a good lightning photo this year. but I messed around a little bit. So many beautiful photos taken this year,, Very nice!!

This I did free handed.. So it's a bit fuzzy,

This one I did last year on accident. It was close. You can see the step leader in the road.
