Wilson Sleek with HTC EVO

Nice to see what my phone is actually doing. I run the same Wilson amp as well for years with the Wilson Trucker "alien" antenna (what it is affectionately known as) and you can see quite the difference between amp/no amp. I don't have a direct connect, but taking the internal antenna and a small rubber band, it's done wonders for my aircard out in the boondocks.

Chris I got free equipment from them for the sponsorship and that was a long time ago and btw that partnership was a result of me liking their products. It wasn't they gave me something and then I said I liked it. I also bought a direct connect Maximum Signal amp to go to the same aircard. I'm just calling them like I see it. I have both amps, but if you watch any one of my chase videos you will see my aircard on my right vent in the cradle for the Wilson amp. If it is as you say and I'm just plugging them (which I am under no obligation to do) because they gave me some free stuff a few years ago, then why would I continue using that one over my maximum signal direct connect? Doesn't make much sense.
Also why do people complain about them being hot? Maybe it feels hot because it has a metal casing while the maximum signal amp is some sort of plastic. Ever consider that? Metal is a better conductor of heat.
I don't care what you or anybody else buys. All I'm saying is I have two amps and my wireless Wilson amp works better without a doubt. Or is that not possible Chris lol. If you love max signal amps so much I will gladly sell you the one I have at a good price.

Mikey, the reason we complain about the heat is the fact its an inferior product in the crosshairs of the FCC. They use the same wattage, a full 3 watts, no matter how much power or bandwidth is needed to make the same connection with the same speeds. It's hogging resources on the carriers towers causing others to be kicked off the tower and making is so fewer people can use the tower. The maximum power isn't always the best solution and the proof is in the new Wireless Amps by Maximum Signal as well as the direct connect amps by Cyfre and Maximum Signal. They use far less power and don't overheat which can cause the unit to burn out faster and as far as that goes I have seen heat issues cause fires.

The new wireless amp from Maximum Signal is in a polycarbonite case because they generate no heat and don't need the aluminum case or a metal case. The only time there might be a heat issue is if there is a short in the antenna. You making the point about the "plastic" case which is actually a polycarbonate case as noted above is just proof that the unit doesn't generate heat so your comments are asinine. Metal does disipate heat better than polycarbonate does and Maximum Signal can get by using the polycarbonate because it does not generate heat.

As for the reason the Maximum Signal wireless amp doesn't generate heat is plain and simple.... They do not get hot because they use software driven amplification compared to hardware driven . I am not the only chaser that has testified to the difference - Steve Miller from Oklahoma for example made this write up on the Maximum Signal wireless amp: http://www.hamwx.com/?p=4103

Another good read is from Jack Mayer from RV Forums

I can go on and on with names of well known chasers that are now using the wireless amp by Maximum Signal and it isn't because they got it for free. They paid for them just like everyone else has to and they love the results they get.

If you want to compare things I dare you to put the wireless Wilson against the new Maximum Signal wireless amp. They are not even in the same universe performance wise.

When is Wilson going to admit they are in FCC's cross hairs and it is only a matter of time now? There has not been one complaint filed against a Cyfre amplifier or Maximum Signal amplifier with the FCC!

I guess you think it's nice to use a product that screws up Cellular networks and screws other people on the same tower. It Is documented on FCC site many times over with the Wilson products. Also, why do the carriers want the Wilson amps banned? It's because they hog all the towers resources which it sounds like doesn't matter to you one bit. The Maximum Signal amps are the only ones carrier approved, and It's not just one carrier. Do your homework before trying and going up against me again on a product I have tested for the past 7 to 8 years and more than probably anyone else. Lets just see who is left standing when the decision is handed down here pretty soon by the FCC. The Wilson dealers will be scrambling to get the Maximum Signal Products to sell and they will be to late.

So Mikey, before asking a question like you did that started this I suggest you know not only the product you are promoting but also the product you are bashing and the FCC information that is available proving this. And since I have tried them all I can honestly give a true and unbiased opinion and not one based off someone giving me free product to go around and brag about it.

The Sleek is still an awesome device, which is why this thread was created.

Chris, you sound like a salesman, do you happen to have some affiliation with Maximum Signal? I'm not saying I disagree with you, because I don't. If I were buying a full size amp it would be from max sig but it sure seems like you have a vested interest. (simply curiosity)

Thank you for the product review. I have actually been considering this product as well for my EVO. This along with another video review has made me a believer.

I have nothing to hide and only spoke up when Mikey asked why everyone dislikes Wilson so I spoke my mind on his question. Just a little ticked off since I can't ever get on the towers so I started doing research on cellular amps and found out the Wilson I was using was the problem so I was no way going to use or support a product causing issues with everyone else on the tower so I set out to find the best amp that doesn't hog carrier resources and have spent my own cash on everything. I have bought 2 direct connects from Maximum Signal and 2 of the wireless Maximum Signal amps as well as 4 others made by other companies and found these to be the best. It's called doing my home work and not just using whats given to me and then bragging about it. Thats why I provided links was to show that I have not only done my own testing but have read everyone else's as well.

A simple no would suffice. You are just extremely enthusiastic about maximum signal products and are very quick to shoot down Wilson devices regardless of other peoples good experiences so it just made me wonder. Thanks for the clarification.

It seems to me like the so-called hogging of a cell tower is a little unrealistic. How many cell phones is one tower providing a signal for? 10's of thousands? I bet less than 1% are using any kind of signal booster. I see people complain that the mass of chasers bogged down the towers, but I really doubt 100 chasers adding to 10,000 other cell phones in the area is making much of a difference. However, this is just speculation, so if you have data to prove me wrong, go ahead.

Anyway, back to the Wilson Sleek... I have used it on a couple chases now with pretty good results, though I haven't really been in any known dead areas. Most of the time when I've checked it, my phone has had a full signal. The phone itself doesn't work extremely well as a modem, so my data is a little slow, but I think that's just a result of the phone, not the amplifier. Overall I think this is a good choice if you're on a budget, and can't afford a $300 amp.

I know this is an old thread, but I currently use a mount system from panavise in my car to hold my EVO. I'm wondering if the SLEEK would mount to the panavise bracket. Right now my setup is the panavise INDash bracket with a proclip adjustable holder on it and they work like they were made for each other.

Thanks for the help!

This is the mount that the sleek uses. So unless you have a connector with that end you would probably have to improvise as there is no other mounting option at current (that I have seen). I recently switched cars and went from the 3M tape mount on the dash to a windshield mount due to lack of options for placement.

On second thought, you could probably attach the panavise bracket to the back of the sleek with double sided adhesive as long as you let it set thoroughly. That would probably hold pretty well although heat may eventually become a factor. The back of the sleek is flat (except for the recess that the mount goes into) so it might be worth a shot.

I use the Wilson Sleek also. It works well for me while chasing and I've had no issues with it at all. Thanks for the info about the 4G amplifier James...may have to look into that :)
