Well, unfortunately the monsoon is over, got some nice pictures though. It's been getting pretty cold here, skies have been clear for the most part. I wouldn't be surprised to wake up to snow pretty soon here. It's mostly been in the 30s or 40s, but today is in the 60s. I'm hoping to have some interesting cloud formations worth taking pictures of pretty soon, I haven't seen a single cloud in... a week, a week and a half, something like that.

Haha, that's exactly what you said on my last thread. I've had trouble uploading them, but I will get them up soon. There are, however, a few pictures from other monsoon seasons in an album of mine, here on Stormtrack.

That's because you did the same thing again. Talking about pics and not showing them is like going to show and tell, and only doing the tell part. It does not work very well.

Under the FAQ/Rules there are instructions on how to attach photos. If you can re-size an image and save it as a .jpg on a computer, it's quite simple to attach. Just be sure you follow the forum rules on size limits to avoid an infraction. If you have pics on photobucket or flickr you can link them even easier. It was discussed in another thread recently about how to link them. Again, be careful about size so that you avoid an infraction.

We don't infract users for minor mistakes, so feel free to give it a try whenever you're ready.

Yeah Chris...it's just a friendly nudge...nothing major. I've even posted about imagery without an actual image right away.

ST Photo Sizing

While we're kicking around photo posting, I could sure learn something if someone would care to explain why I'm not getting what I think I should be getting.

Using the lightning photos I posted in "Chasing the Southwest Monsoon as an example, the properties of the original photos that I downloaded to my computer were 3456 X 2304.

The limit on Stormtrack uploads is 620 X 280 for a JPEG. I brought each photo into Microsoft Office Picture Manager and told it to resize it to the required 620 X 280. After it was finished, I looked at the properties and it tells me that they are 420 X 280, not 620 X 280. Since that is less than the ST limit, I went ahead and posted the photos. Now when I click on the properties of the photos that I posted, it states they are 350 X 233.

As a senior citizen, I'm used to getting kidded about being senile, but math is one of my specialties and I don't see why this is happening. Any thoughts?

Oops

It had been some time since I saw a decent close-up lightning strike, when that odd tornado watch was issued over N. IL last week, I went out for the "left-overs" in W. IN.

Managed to capture a distant bolt on my first exposure, 30 sec.

And then I bumped up the ISO hoping to get some better contrast... Just barely missed a sweet bolt on the left side of the image, doh!

And then I was hoping to shoot one with my non-reliable, typically non-chase vehicle "85' Diesel Mercedes Benz". It started raining and I panicked... during the 30 sec. exposure I ran the camera back to the car... at which time the lightning finally occurred with two CG's, one being a sweet multiple return-stroke beauty. So, in the end it made one unique/artsy picture.

The result of running around trying to avoid rain and shoot long exposures was me leaving my "brand-name" Canon cable-release on the roof of my vehicle as I raced down a 4 lane highway to the next county road... once there I realized the cable release was no longer with me and upon finding it discovered that a semi had found it just a minute prior to myself.

Lesson learned: Don't get in such a damned hurry. Your equipment's safety relies upon your patience and careful accounting of it's safe existence within your vehicle, prior to running from close lightning and approaching rains!

PS: Somehow... the thing still works, with some patience and caution as to not cut your finger!

There you go Christopher, we've got some images in here now and one hell of an embarrassing story.

Now let's see those monsoon pictures!!!

Terrence, I doubt there's any guts in the part that got crushed there. Wrap it up in some duct tape and you're good to go. :D

Okay, figured out how to do it, but it looks like the picture may be too big, any way to shrink it?

I'll be messing with it. And I will upload the pictures when I get it working.

It's not like facebook which will automatically size down a pic, so you'll need to resize the photo before you upload it. You can use the software that came with your camera, or via whichever post processing software you are using.

Also, liked pics 12, 25, 125, and 133 in your "weather 12" album. Nice composition.
