WAP site for SPC products?

Another quick change... I made the graphics clickable, so you should be able to click each graphic, which'll bring up a page with the full-resolution graphic.

Since this is turning out to be a pretty cool deal, I'm going to add Storm Reports as well, and I may just add Mesoanalysis graphics in time...

S Porter,
Are you able to view the graphics in full-color? What service do you have? Should I add mesoanalysis graphics? Would anyone use them given the relatively slow speed of cell phone data transfer technologies (beit GPRS, EDGE, etc)... I suppose it'd be fine if you used somelike like EVDO or HSPDA ...

I'm getting the watches & MCD images in B&W, though.

Yeah, that's common for cell phone WAP servers.. As I mentioned earlier, the Cingular WAP proxy automatically makes graphics black-and-white and severely reduces their resolution. This is fine in most cases, since it means smaller graphics and faster load times. But other times, such as in this case, it's undesirable. I'm not familiar with your phone, so I don't know if there's a work-around or not (as there is with my MPx220 + Cingular)...

I'm using a Moto V551 thru Cingular. Last 2 images are B&W. I would say add all the graphics you want to, but it would be nice to have individual links rather than the images loading automatically; that way you can choose which image you wish to view. But hey, I think you've already done a superb job as it is!

Jeff, _YOU_ are THE MAN!!!

Great job!

If it's not too much trouble :) perhaps you could add links to the mesoanalysis products. I for one would use them if I you could break them up into the 3 regions and then have links to each image rather than loading them all at once.

When I click on the links, it goes to another page, but there's no image there. I DO like the images for the main items...swody1/2/3, MCD & watches since they're the ones referred to most often; anything else I would prefer links to rather than thumbnails, ESPECIALLY if you add the mesoanalysis images!

Ok, try http://www.tornadocentral.com/spcproducts1.wml ... Do you like the thumbnail-sized pics on the page or not?

OK, I have added the SPC Mesoanalysis graphics to my SPC WAP page...

You can navigate to them via http://www.tornadocentral.com/wap/spc.wml

For those who don't want any images on the opening page (such that there are only links to text and graphics for the convective outlooks, etc, though NOT including the mesoanalysis pages, which are linked only), you can go to: http://www.tornadocentral.com/wap/spctext.wml

I'm trying to find a good WAP source for MCD and Watch text...

FYI: I have a new Mot.V551 and it does not have an option for "Internet
browser" just WAP. So, if you have a phone that is displaying these graphics (mine will not) you should keep your current phone instead of trading-up.

I'm guessing they want to limit download bandwidth so the feature
has been removed on newer phones?

Hey Mike, I came across this and maybe that can help you. I don't use GSM so I'm not too terribly familiar with them. But if anyone needs help with CDMA Motos v710 or v265, let me know. I basically set up my home computer as a WAP gateway and set my ports to 80 (HTTP access) instead of 9201 (WAP) and all works well on my end.

But for GSM users, check this out:
Cingular WAP Settings for CSD and GPRS
Here are the WAP settings for Cingular GSM Phones:

Using CSD (aka Wireless Internet)
Function Setting
Settings Name: Cingular Wireless Internet
Home Page: http://device:home or http://device.home
Session Mode: Permanent
Connection Security: On
Dial-up Number: 14152441012
Gateway IP Address: 66.209.11.61
Authentication Type: Secure
Dial Type: ISDN (on network)
Analogue (off network)
Login Type: Automatic
User Name: [email protected]
(All upper case)
Password: CINGULAR1
(All upper case)

Using GPRS (aka Wireless Internet Express)
Function Setting
Settings Name: Cingular Wireless Internet Express
Home Page: http://device:home or http://device.home
Session Mode: Permanent
Connection Security: On
APN: wap.cingular (lower case)
PDP_Type: IP
Gateway IP Address: 66.209.11.61
Authentication Type: Secure
Login Type: Automatic
User Name: [email protected]
(All upper case)
Password: CINGULAR1
(All upper case)

*If you're using CSD it deducts from your airtime minutes. If it's GPRS it's taken against any data package that you may have. In either case I believe you have to have cingular provision your account for it though CSD may be enabled by default. VoiceStream commonly enabled CSD as standard. I'm not sure what cingular's policy is.

Thanks for information.

I'm not having problems connecting.... I can read the SPC text files,
but I get a small, boxed icon where the graphics should be that
has a small circle with a bar through it and the name of the graphic that
should be there. The browser is set to >multi media> images on, so
that should do it.

If anyone with a V551 is able to download, let me know!

Thank you, Mike

SUCCESS!

Well.... it's amazing what drinking two cups of strong coffee can
do to the mind.

I figured out the issues re: downloading SPC graphics on the
V551.

For some reason, the browser on my V551 will not download a
graphic file size of 16kb, which are the larger SPC
graphics. I'm guessing this is the same issue others have had.

However, when I went to the outlook page
(http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook)
and simply used the url's for the smaller graphics
(day1otlk_sm.gif) for example, the files were small
enough to download -- and did so quickly because they were
smaller. The quality is good.

Hope this helps:

Mike

Leon Minton of CIMMS/SRH has done it again! He now has warning/watch information posted by state to www.srh.noaa.gov/wml ; just go to the main page, click on watches & warnings, then enter a state abreviation. All valid watches & warnings for the state are listed, along with the office that issued it...just click on the link to the one you wish to view.

Regards,
Steve
