• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Ok, I have pulled out my old camera to give it a little test and there was a problem with it. Took it to the shop and had our IE Tech take a look at it and he said that it had water damage....

I have started looking around and comparing prices....My question is, does anyone know a whole lot about JVC cameras??????

I have always bought Sony and they have treated me good... Here is the website to the camera that I have been looking at and I just wanted to here some opinions on it and hear the ups and downs about it....... Thanks

I saw a comparible Sony camera at Compusa in Lubbock the other day for $542 since they are closing out the store and liquidating the merchandise.

Looking at the specs from the manufacturer, I got as far as the lux rating and gave up.

JVC Everio-G GZ-HD7US Hard Disk HD Camcorder
Product Type Camcorder
Digital Zoom 200 x
Progressive scan Yes
Optical Sensor Size 1/5 in
Optical Sensor Type 3CCD
Min Illumination 18 lux

High def has a long ways to go yet in an affordable low lux cam. I'd say save your $$$ and go with the Sony FX1. Yeah, it's a little more than twice the cost but would you be happy with 1/2 the quality in your video?

I was considering that JVC camera for a couple months. Reviews I found on it were mixed and I saw that alot of people mention it had horrible stabilization (that scared me off right there). I messed with it in Best Buy a few times, it seemed alright but I went with the Canon HV20 in the end after looking at a bunch of reviews and testing out a lot of different cameras in the store.

Hands down the best HD Camcorder for storm chasing in the consumer class is the Canon HV20. Not only is it just under $700 but it sports the best image quality in both good and low light and you just can't beat how some people are rigging them up. Stay away from the JVC because not only is it twice as expensive as the HV20, the image quality isn't even close. The only comparable model in the consumer HD realm is the Sony HDR-HC7 but it suffers from major problems in low light. I own an HC3 which I bought a year and a half ago and I'm getting rid of it for a Canon XH-A1 which is the much bigger brother of the HV20.

My best recommendation is without a doubt get the HV20 from bhphotovideo or a similar online camera store that is both reputable and offering the camcorder at under $700. If you don't mind spending a bit more money you could get the new HC-30, but it's both brand new and pricier with the same image quality as the HV20. Hope I helped clear up your problem a bit :)

Instead of starting another thread, I will just post here since the topic is video cameras. I just took a leap and bought a Panasonic PV-GS320 3 CCD camcorder for $380 bucks. Obviously not the best camcorder, but then again, not too bad for the money. I have had a Sony digital 8 camcorder since 2001 and thought it was time to step up. I have a friend that has a similar Panasonic camcorder, and he really loves the picture quality compared to digital 8. I chase for a local TV station, so I don't need pro quality video, just video that will look good on the local news.

By the way, does anyone have any experience with this particular video camera that you would like to share?

Hi,

Does anybody know if the HV20 records the bass really good? Because atm. I own some JVC camcorder, but it is out of date, and it does not record the bass very well. (i.e. CG's sound a bit like IC's somtimes). The framerate is also not really good, it is just good enough to record any strike, but some strikes appear to be very weak or far away while they are actually not.

many thanks,

Koos

I picked one up last season after my other camera died, and I didn't want to yet spring on HD. The daytime quality is very good. I haven't had much of a chance to try it at night, so I can't comment on that.

My biggest gripe with the camera is more usability.... that the manual focus to infinity must be made every time the camera is turned on, and it requires two hands (holding a spring switch while holding another knob). You also can't have the battery attached while it's plugged in, as all ports (Firewire, AC) are under the battery.

But for that low price, you can't expect everything!
