Very impressive LBB "precipitation"

LBB radar is showing a monumental meteodynamic vortex, with storm totals of over eight inches(!) of water. In case those in the Lubbock area (current temp of 34 degrees) are unaware of the phenomenon, you might want to seek higher ground immediately. Well, whatever counts for higher ground around there....

Ok, I'm Googling, but not finding a whole lot of good info regarding this phenomenon. The radar loop is definitely interesting, but I'm really curious what sort of dynamics are required for it to form.

It's called "bright banding" and occurs when snow passed through the melting layer.

I was in Lubbock for their almost 8 inch rain day in 2008 ( http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lub/?n=events-2008-20080911_rain). There was a stalled out vehicle on almost every block. Needless to say we stayed inside our second floor apartment for most then event. Just like any other 9-11. Unforgettable!

IIRC Lubbock PD lost ~12 cars that day to high water stalls. Half of them were det. or higher ups. I ruined a pair of shoes that day helping a friend in her lowered Toyota. Why she thought she could make it I'll never know. I wish I had my video camera with me because a group of guys were out in their white water kayaks!!

Lubbock can not handle that kind of water.

Lubbock wouldn't know what to do with 8" if it walked up and smacked it in the face. That being said I had friends still calling me to tell me there were streets closed due to flooding and cars "floating".
