Verizon Broadband- 4G

Sorry to start a new thread for this but I couldn't find any info or threads otherwise. I have Verizon for my broadband, and the last couple of chase seasons, my USB720 will suddenly power off, thereby I lose my internet connection(of course). The modem is probably 3 years old at least. I'm hoping it's a problem with the modem and not the USB port on my laptop.
First off, does this sound like a modem issue or possibly my laptop? Secondly, I would like to buy a new modem and not have to commit to a contract. I looked on ebay for a replacement modem and found a few like my current model. However, I went to the Verizon site and they are listing their new 4G modems. Do I need a new modem to get the 4G service and speed, or does my modem automatically pick up the 4G network and speeds? In other words, should I just buy a cheaper USB720 modem or try to find a newer modem for more money? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Brandon is right. Also, unless you plan to chase near major cities, I wouldn't recommend getting 4G (only some cities have coverage too), as that is really the only location you can pick it up.

I had this same problem with my Verizon USB aircard. After 3 months of pulling my hair out, I figured out the problem was unreliable power from my laptops USB port. It would "waver", and the aircard would power off. I solved my problem by buying a "powered USB hub", and running all my equipment thru it. Has not happened since. Important enough that I run a spare one in my Xterra in case my primary fails. Quick switch over.

thanks for the info guys! jeff- could you give me a link to, or the brand name of the powered USB hub that you use? i did a search on ebay and found this, although it seems a little big: http://cgi.ebay.com/7-Port-USB-2-0-High-Speed-HUB-Powered-AC-Adapter-Free-/180522745344?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a07fe7e00

also found this smaller one: http://cgi.ebay.com/7-Port-USB-2-0-High-Speed-Hub-Powered-Free-AC-Adapter-/280628743112?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4156c6cbc8

is this kindof what you were referring to jeff? how are the speeds through one of these, especially if i were to also upgrade to a new 4G usb modem?

last question, right now i only have one power converter that i plug into my cig lighter. i normally would use this if my laptop battery is low. what could i use to plug in 2 items, i.e. my laptop and a powered usb hub? would the fuse for cig lighter be able to handle 2 pieces of electronics?

thanks for all the info guys! sorry, i am not very tech savvy!!
