I'm having some trouble installing SoloII onto my linux machine. I'm fairly new to linux/unix. I need this to view about 5Gb of DORADE Sweep files (raw radar basically).

My trouble is after I envoke the configure file, I get massive errors when trying to make the executable file.

I think I need the earlier GTK+ librairies but i had a conflict on installing those.

Maybe someone in the research community could help out?

Do you have NETCDF installed? The make/install files need this for the installation to go smooth. If you don't thats ok too. Just search through the dozen of files or so and comment out the NETCDF lines.

You can do a find command for netcdf to make the search and replace opeartion go quicker!

(I had this issue when I installed the program)

say what?

I'm not at that machine now... but since you have installed solo II then you know what you are doing.

This might require some phonecalls. I'll try to get up with you when I can get to teh computer. its at the house and I dont have web there.

I'll try to install netcdf and then i'll let you know what's up.

Thanks bro.

ok I got netCDF to install properly but this still did not let soloii install.

in teh soloii readme file, it states that the GTK+ 1.2 libaries are required.

I tried to install those but they need glib 1.2.8 installed.

I installed glib1.2.8 and then when i tried to install gtk+ 1.2.8 it gave me an error....
checking for glib-config... /usr/local/bin/glib-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.8... no

*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the

glib 1.2.8 is installed and as far as I could tell it installed properly.

I can acess the glib-config file but i dont know exactly what to edit.

Nothing is standing out at me.... it could still be the netcdf references in soloii (we had netcdf installed and it still didn't work).

Don't ya just love the cain-o-installs ;)

ha this is killing me!

I did have one development in this though... There was an error in the untarring of the GLIB that I wasnt catching so we'll see once I get that installed.

Well I have changed over to SuSe 10.0 Linux. It already has the GTK 1.2 toolkit installed as well as teh GLIB1.2 libraries. I'm slowly but surely turning into a Unix/linux geek but I still cant get solo II to install. I really need it now since I now have a deadline for this paper we are writing.

I havent had a chance to try the netCDF libraries but it says I dont neccessarily need them in the soloII readme file.

Blake:

Try installing FreeBSD - the ports collection makes installing packages like GLib and GTK much easier.

With SuSe 10.0 you're going to run into the same problems as before.

If you have this machine on a publically accessable IP, let me know, and I can assist you with configuring it, as I'm a *nix/network engr. as my other life.

i'd rather keep suse 10.0. Apparently it will work with solo II. SuSe10.0 also already has glib and GTK+1.2 installed already.

I think it's a problem with things going into the correct directories.

the command line i'm using is straight out of the readme file.

after i untar (assuming i am doing it correctly) the file into the root folder, it's starts a directory tree with 'soloii110" from there i invoke the configure file as follows.

./configure --exec_prefix=/rdss --bindir=/rdss/bin

as per the readme file. then i type "make" and i get an error, let me try again and i'll get the exact error message.

also which desktop environment is better or required to use SoloII? Gnome or KDE? I have KDE on now and I'm seeing a ton of /opt/gnome references in the configuration of soloII.

Since it's calling alot of GTK stuff, I'm personally more baised toawrds gnome.

-Eric

that's what im afraid of. and since KDE is recommended for ex windows users i'm in a tight spot.

I'll give it a try but I really like KDE as a daily desktop environment

If you have used KDE for a while, GNOME isn't that bad - you can do add ons with it to make it look more 'windows-y' if you want. I personally prefer gnome, but hey, whatever floats your boat. :)

Were you ever able to get a copy of the errors?

You need to do a couple of things first.

It looks like configure is farking out on you, so you need to do the following:

in /rdss/soloii110/

rm config.cache
make clean

And then when that is done, since libncurses isn't installed by default IIRC....

You should be able to do a ln -sf /lib/libncurses.so.5.0 /lib/libcurses.so and I think that'll correct the issue with libncurses not showing up. (if you can't do a 'locate libcurses' and find anything, then you may need to install libncurses which you can do from package or .rpm or compile by hand if you're really daring)

If this machine is publically accessable, I wouldn't mind digging in and seeing if I can get it going.

It also wigged out on not finding a fortran compiler although it looks like most of it is C (I couldn't see any fortran programs trying to compile).

Ok, we are getting places.

Try to install the "xdevel"-RPM from your SuSE CD and then attempt the ./configure and make again.
