It was only forecast to be a weak tropical storm passing way offshore. Less than 24 hours after it was named and upgraded to TS I managed to shoot this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o01gzkZ4O54
Thank you for sharing this exquisite video, so professionally done as well.
I'm surprised that the city still had it's lights!
Also enjoyed your "strobe lightning" video relative to the outer band.
Koppu was a real pleasure to film, one of those storms where I didn't have to worry about travelling hundreds of miles, and investing 100s of $ on fuel/air tickets. This whole video was shot 500m from my apartment. At 10pm local time, I saw the typhoon was moving west, quite far offshore Hong Kong, and I was not expecting anything of interest to materialise from it. And when it all kicked off it was like being a young kid waking up on a winter's morning and seeing the whole outside world blanketed in snow! A real treat.
As for the lightning footage, I wish I could have really captured the true intensity of that thunderstorm. Over 13,000 lightning strikes were recorded over Hong Kong in 1.5 hours. It was all shot from my 17th floor apartment so I wasn't in a position to crawl outside and wipe the water off the window!
One strong curiosity is that the scene is fully lit with no flickering, no power flashes, etc.
Did Hong Kong build most of their electric infrastructure underground?
Did you witness any power flashes or lose any power during your intercept experience?
