I agree Chris - very impressive image - I am trying to recall (or dig up a picture) of the Hurricane that had those vortex swirls in the eye - I *think* it may have been Ivan or Rita??

Isabel in 2003 (?) if I am correct had wagon wheels in the eye. Another hurricane also had this but I forget which one. Is that what you are refering to?

Isabel had pretty good mesovortices present:

I have similar relatively large images of the eyes for the following storms:
Katrina (this one is also as neat, IMO, as Isabel)
Emily (my 3rd favorite eye image)
Ivan
Dennis (also had an uber-intense burst of convection along a part of the eyewall)
Rita

That's not a bad exampe of Isabels "Wagon wheels" - but there was one image (I remember it well) with almost symerical vortex swirls within the eye - it was a stunning image and did the rounds of many web forums - of course four years later I can't find the image ...

I think I know the picture you are talking about. I think it was Isadore just north of the Yucatan.

If you could easily see the swirls, then the image may have been made by one of the MODIS satellites (Terra or Aqua). The only image I could find of Isadore when it was a hurricane and near the Yucatan can be found at http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/?2002265-0922 (there was another image of Isadore in that archive a few days earlier, but it wasn't impressive)... The 250m image shows some interesting features, but I'm not sure that's the one y'all are thinking about (if I'm remembering the same image correctly).

Good day all,

Hurricane Isabel in 2003 was impressive to say the least: cat-5 at 175-MPH, 70 NM wide eye, annular hurricane (just an eyewall, little feeder-bands, like a "truck-tire") ...

The ENHANCED close-up below shows at least 5 meso-vortices inside the eye of Isabel.

The wider-view picture below shows 4 pinwheeling meso-vortices inside the eye of Isabel.

A You-Tube link for Hurricane-Hunter video of the "stadium" structure of this 70-Mile wide eye can be seen at the link below...
