Storms of 2008?

You could help out and take a chapter. I am sure they would apreciate that.

(1) I have no production skills.

(2) I haven't been on here pining for the continuation of this series, merely commenting on the observations that many besides myself have been making.

(3) Practice what you preach...you still have about 11 hours.

Unless things have changed, looks like the SO 2008 project has less than a day to find five chapter producers, or it's all over. Considering two of the five events still needing a producer are May 23/24 (two of the biggest days of the year) I'd say the interest needed to pull off such a mammoth project just isn't there anymore. Hats off to everyone who's stepped up and tried to get this thing off the ground...just looks like there isn't enough overall interest this time around. I have to admit, a month ago I thought the last job where volunteers would be lacking would be Chapter Producer.

Again, unless things have changed that I'm unaware of.
Unfortunately, you're not wrong.

I'm giving everyone until Friday. Anyone left interested in producing a chapter MUST confirm with me by Friday. May 23rd is the top priority now. Someone contacted me with interest in May 24th, but I have not yet received a final answer yet.

I would but I have no idea about production and making DvD's. I figured since you sell DvD's of you're chases that you would know what to do. I had no idea you had no production skills and for that I aplogize. I understand why you are asking questions about this project.

I would be less interested to watch it if May 25, the day of the EF5 Parkersburg tornado was not on the DvD. I just feel a event that historic is to big to not have on the DvD. We do not realy need footage. Just a chapter explaining the event. That might be boring to some and is just an idea. That is just my oppiniun and I will say nothing more on that topic.

I hope you guy's find enough chapter producers but if not you could always take a break for a year to get more organized and than restart the project in 2009. Just an idea.

Mickey Ptak does all my production work. Without him I wouldn't have any DVDs. No apology necessary.

I agree that maybe taking a year off to regroup the project for 2009 would be a good idea.

Well, I've done some thinking.

We have 6 people that are dedicated to producing great chapters for this project. We're going to do this.

If there were ever a year for a group of tornado chasers to put together a DVD, this would be that year. We've had 121 fatalities from tornadoes and over a billion dollars in damage, and that's just through May.

If the DVD ends up being an hour and a half or even a little less, then so be it. There is a group dedicated to this project, and we are going forward.

If there are any other last-minute offers to produce chapters, I will, again, accept them by Friday at the absolute latest.

Hopefully this will quell the notion of there being no Storms of 2008.

MAJOR NEWS:

We have chapter editors for May 23rd and May 25th, and possibly May 10th and May 24th.

Ben McMillan will edit May 25th.

Mark Farnik will edit May 23rd.

More to come very soon on the status of May 10th and May 24th.

That gives us at least 8, possibly 10 chapters. I am still looking for perhaps 1 or 2 additional chapters, with May 1st and 2nd leading that list. Friday is the last day to let me know if you would like to create that chapter or a different one.

Just want to send a big thanks out to Tony. He kept the faith while others, including me, were ready to call off the whole deal and move on. He dug in and now it looks like this is definitely a GO.

Andrew Ryan has offered to edit May 1st/2nd, so here is where we stand so far:

Heidi Farrar: February 5th
Donald Giuliano: March 2nd
Andrew Ryan: May 1st/2nd
Verne Carlson: May 22nd
Mark Farnik: May 23rd
Ben McMillan: May 25th
Robin Tanamachi: May 29th
Bill Doms: June 7th
Kory Hartman: June 11th

I'm still waiting for responses about May 10th and May 24th.

Since this might apply to people who haven't joined the SO2008 board yet, I will go ahead and post this here also. I'd like to hear from anyone who has any worthwhile chase video from Feb. 5th. I know not a lot of chasers saw tornadoes that day, but I am still interested in using structure, hail, damage video or photos, etc. Video footage is hard to come by, so if you have anything at all, or if you know anyone who does, shoot me a PM. Thanks!

Brandon Ivey has offered to edit the May 24th chapter. That leaves the only big event left without an editor as being May 10th. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM.

I will be contributing footage from June 7th.

Im glad to see this project is still alive, and Im glad I finally have something worth contributing, as its been a "self goal" of mine since I became aware of it in 2006. One day I will get on board with learning how to edit/produce.

FYI- the youtube video is not all our footage. It is just what a local tv station (KCCI) decided to post. Here is more video from Quintin's original storm report.

http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk91/qerdman/?action=view&current=Parkersburg1.flv

I know our video did not show much of the wedge, and more of its initial formation and aftermath. However, if you look at time 1:36 on the clip posted above, we film the tornado as it is entering Parkersburg. (you can see the town to the left in the shot)

I also noticed in the reports section other chasers with video (Kurt Hulst, Jerry Funfsinn to name a few) so we were not the only chasers out.

I am sure if we communicate with people I can get enough video. I just need someone to help with the producing/ editing work so we can develop a professional product. Thoughts, suggestions?

Incase you did not know Rod Donovan from the NWS in Iowa has a great photograph of the Parkersburg tornado as it was near New Heartford. You could try and contact him and see if he has footage of it. Here is a link to the survey for the torndo if you have not seen it yet: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dmx/?n=parkersburg
