storm based warnings...

NOTE: Weather warning is a steady siren for 3 to 5 minutes.

Attack imminent is a wailing siren for 3 to 5 minutes.
Back on September 22nd 2006 the sirens being sounded downtown were the wailing sirens instead of the steady sirens. On this day a brief tornado touched down on a university campus. There a video of it on youtube of the sirens and of the tornado.

i do not understand the difference between a "wailing" siren, and a "steady" siren...can someone please clarify this for me?

A "wailing" siren is a tone somewhat like a police siren: rise-fall rise-fall. The most common wail is 6 to 8 seconds "on" followed by 6 seconds off.
Here are two videos demonstrating "alert" aka steady tone and "attack" aka wail tone.

Sirens

A "Steady" siren is one that winds up and stays on one "note" for the duration of the blast...

oooeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeooo

A "Wailing" siren goes up and down during the duration of the signal...

oooeeeeeeEEEEEEeeeeeooo...oooeeeeeEEEEEEeeeeooooo

hope that helps...
