SPRINT PCS are crooks!

Im sure folks already know this. Sprint uses shady and questionable business practices.

I used their phone service since 2001. This year while in western Ks. ( May 4th and 5th ) I was charged roaming fees. My understanding was I can use the phone in Kansas and Missouri with 1000 minutes.

They turned my phone off because of an outside cost of the monthly approval amount an additional .50 a minute roaming charges. totaling about 150 minutes of roaming charges. for a total of wanting something like $200

I then asked them to turn my phone off. They said I could not. This caused me some depression and I was detached from the whole situation out of anxiety. I started service with Verizon.

As I detached myself from the problem they continued to charge me a monthly fee. This grew to about $ 400 + dollars as I recall.

I went to the Sprint store to settle this issue eventually as the hate mail from Sprint poured in.

They were unable to help me. They put me on the phone in the Sprint store as i waited for an aprox 30 minutes. And another 20 - 30 minutes on the phone with them. Total - 50 min to an hour.

They wanted their $ 400 to disconnect my service, although it was laready disconnected. And to pay my bill in full.

The amount they claimed I owed them changed form person to person that I spoke with. This was frustrating as well.

Anyways this goes on and they refused to send me a paid in full letter or bill. They said my next bill would reflect a zero balance.

Now this was back in the summer. I thought this was taken care of. Fast forward to today. I receive a letter from sprint requesting $ 11.40. And that suspension of my service was imminent.

I am just overwhelmed by these business practices. I can never get to a decision maker at Sprint. They threaten me with adverse action to my credit and suspending my phone I thought I had buried 6 months ago.

I called againb waited on hold and wen through the prompts. They told me my last bill of $ 38,983.17 was unpaid. I asked him. I said do you believe that amount is accurate? He laughed and said no. I said then why do you believe that the 11.40 was accurate? He said he would waive the $ 11.40.

I want to believe this is true and they have gone away for good. But I have my doubts. This nightmare seems it will never end.

Please I beg and implore you. please save yourself time and heartache, avoid Sprint at all costs. Its like an ex wife wanting money that never goes away.

Honestly the best way for you to get results in a situation like this where essentially the company ignores your issue is to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. You can do this online from their website. I have only had to do this once in my life but I had almost immediate resolution with the company I had the problem with.

FWIW, my dealings with Verizon have been straightforward and above board. They're easy to reach and you know what you're getting and where you stand. Several times over the years, such as last month we've been on target to go over our allotted minutes, and they've been quite generous with granting some tide-over bonus minutes and temporarily modifying the contract. Their EVDO and 1X coverage on the road last spring considerably exceeded their advertised coverage. Any billing issues have been quickly addressed and clarified.

I've used a AT&T/Cingular 2125 with an unlimited DataConnect plan for data for a couple of years now, and I honestly like it better than a laptop for short-fuse forecasting. The screen is small, but I love how I can bring up maps while I'm walking around. The data plan is month-by-month so you can cancel it when you're not using it, via their web site. Be careful, however, not to use data without the unlimited plan in place! The rate is something insane like $0.10/Kilobyte; I got bit by a $300 bill as well one month, and it was my own fault to not change the plan first.

It seems everyone has a horror story for each provider, but this setup hasn't failed me yet. FWIW, it can be a lot more convenient to find a provider who has a rich web interface for your account. It skips the typical on-hold wait to make changes; AT&T's site is nice IMO and I can change plans in a couple minutes since it's all online. I don't call customer service anymore.

It's frustrating to hear you encountered such a load of problems when you needed reliability the most! Hopefully those problems will be a thing of the past for you this next season. Companies love secrets, so they probably hate the fact you're posting your experience for everyone to see. If I need an immediate response I'll advise a company I'm sharing my feedback with others; it might help you get Sprint to do a better job of handling your account. A bill of several thousand dollars is run-away absurd!

From what you have said Sprint is breaking federal law in your case. They are required by law to send you "Validation of Debts" within five days of your request for that information. See page 13 of the following document.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf

I would quote portions of the "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act" to them and threaten to report them to the Federal Trade Commission if they continue to break federal law. If you do that, I bet you will get someone on the phone with at least two brain cells they can rub together.

Simular experience

I would second that motion, the Federal Trade Commission is the way to go with the wireless companies.

For me back in 2005, when I was diagnosed with Kidney failure and was in the hospital for weeks and lost all my savings, I thought I settle with Sprint over a $300 outstanding bill. They did reduce the amount to $150 and gave me a confirmation number to close out the account. I did this originally to keep my top notch credit rating. Since then because of all the mounting medical bills and more the credit rating is in the toilet. About six months later I start getting collection notice saying I still owed them money. I've written to them numerous times to explain I already settled the account, but I still get the notices. Once I'm better (now that I got my Kidney Transplant), I'll be filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission too.

Of course, all this is unfortunate because I think Sprint still has the best network coverage for wireless date in the primary tornado chase zone.

All the big phone companies have horrendous customer service. I had a similar situation with Verizon several years ago. When I had a problem with my ATT wireless bill a few years ago the agent said "We have 48 million customers, we can't keep track of all of them." I was speechless.

They all suck!

Being a long time Sprint customer, and having a few billing issues when upgrading phones or changing plans, Sprint customer service can be unrelenting to deal with. When I started on Sprint, I too had a monthly spending limit, and they don't hesitate to cut you off it you go over it unless you pay it down below that limit. That said, I knew my limit and stayed under it every month and paid early. My account has now grow to multiple lines and they took all limits off of it about a year ago.

I have discovered in the few times I had to deal with a billing issue that calling up support was NOT the way to get anything meaningful done. Now, I email ecare and things go MUCH more quickly and smoothly.

The phone in billing support issues aside, I love the service itself and will stay.

nextel did the same to me in 2001, i settled for a less amount and still got billed. as i was in ny and wash state i was told the service transfers to the"local network" well the overage from ny alone was 400. well i told them to cram it. thats why i go pre paid cell phone. and the 500 deposit sprint wants doesnt help either.

they have no right to threaten anyone you can actually file charges against them.

Being a long time Sprint customer,

David: Were you also one of the ones that got one of the initial cards directly from Sprint right after they debut them at CES back in 2004?

I started with them because I got mine from Weathervine and J. Edds who were at the CES show that year as guest of the Sprint president.

Yeah I got mine in 2004 when you guys got them I believe. I had a phone from them back way before that though. I only pay my phone account though, the TV station provides the Sprint data card year round.

I personally like Sprint....but I have had my share of run-ins. I would second the idea of a complaint to BBB, that should get results but be sure to have your "ducks" in a row....
Good luck.

From my experience the BBB is worthless. They are I private organization that IMO helps bad businesses avoid lawsuits. If I see the BBB logo on website I know to stay clear. Google "BBB scam" and you will see what I am talking about. Even if you like the BBB they have no authority to do anything about or to any company. Use the laws that Congress enacted and report the offending company to the Federal Trade Commission. Just the threat of reporting them should change the way they act.
