Sprint 4g in more cities..including the Plains

I just checked the map. A few days ago when I was getting a new datacard, no 3g was showing up around Lubbock. Now I see a couple of towers with 3G and around Amarillo too! Here it comes officially! FINALLY!

Do any of you know anything about the Sprint Overdrive? It is a mobile WiFi hotspot that supports up to 3 simultaneous users. It supports 3G/4G and is wireless. I'm not a huge downloader of big files so we use the data card as our home internet. This looks like a great option since we have 3 cpus at home and would also be great to take along on chases when my partners have another carrier (take the best signal for data!). This could really be a nice product for chasers.

I think it has been mentioned, but for the same price as 5GB of 3G data you can get unlimited 4GB and 5GB of 3G data....$59.99.

Not anything more than I have read on the Internet several hours last night. I'm about to go up to the Sprint store though, so I may just come home with one.

The 4G unlimited is going to be very limited in availability for a while, although they seem to be rolling it out pretty quick. I know in Texas it mostly runs off Clearwire, so any place they put up service, you'll probably have 4G coverage, and they are hitting small towns even now.

I still will wait for a datacard that has an antenna port....to maximize the effectiveness.

Well I just got the overdrive... here is the speedtest in Lubbock on 4G!

and yes we do now have EVDO automatically in Lubbock County at least:

Almost brings a tear to my eye... LOL

That's great. My Sprint store can order them, but won't carry them for a few months. My current contract on my data card is up this time next year. Hopefully by then the St. Louis area and points northwest will have 4G. Keep us posted on how it works for you this season.

On a side note, I can get a new phone in a couple of weeks and CAN'T WAIT! No more Blackberry browser or memory leaking operating system! Palm Pre here I come.

Not to derail the conversation but Kevin, I own a Palm Pre. Don't get excited about it. It's pretty crappy actually. Perhaps at some time, Palm will pull things together but after using an iPhone, I feel like I'm carrying around a Sprint "turd" in my pocket. Reception is great and I've never had a problem with Sprint per se, it's the programming and speed of the thing.

I stopped in to my house during a lunch break and was going to hit the head. I laid the phone down across the room and did my business. As I got up, I heard ringing and got to the phone as I got someone's voicemail. It dialed by itself just sitting on the counter.

There are sometimes big pauses when you select something on the screen and actually have it happen... I can just be holding the phone and it decides that I've pressed a key... It's just a mess.

Like I said.. Maybe they'll fix all of this but they sure haven't yet. I wish I had my Treo 650 back at this rate...

Not meaning to hijack this thread. I got the Pre when it first came out in July and so far I really like it. I also upgraded for the Tero 700p and at first was like maybe I should have waited or got a blackberry. There are alot of apps out now and yes Palm needs to catch up with the Iphone apps but I can do more with the Pre than I chould with the Tero, just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the input on the Palm. My wife has one and so far so good for her. The lag may annoy me a bit but I'm just needing a better browser and OS.

Back on topic, I wonder if the new networks will change the capacity they can hold. With the increasing popularity of chasing I see clogged towers becoming more of a problem.

Well I have a Overdrive on order, we dont have 4G in Omaha so they gave me a 301 while they get it from another store.

It did not activate when I got home so I spent about a hour on the phone with Sprint getting a 4G plan on it because the store activated it wrong.

I don't think these are ever going to have external antenna jacks on them because of a couple things...

The frequency ranges between CDMA, PCS and WiMAX are so far apart geting one tuned to all of them would not happen easily.

To maintain those speeds it's going to take some SERRIOUS tower & output power management which I guess brings me to my next point.

In my experience with my amp it works REAL well in those areas where you HAVE to have it. However in areas where you don't it seems to hold towers just too long, the device is tricked into thinking XYZ tower 20mi away is the best tower because the amp is giving it full bars when in fact you are sitting directly under a better tower.

EDIT: Oh yea I hated the Pre, buttons TOO SMALL and no onscreen keyboard.

Where this really starts to hurt is in areas where you drive into a EVDO area from a 1X area and don't switch to the higher speed.

The device is made to make the best decisions with the hardware it was given, unless it's necessary just to keep service the amp at times seems more of a hassle.

Scott, I have heard the same things about the amps. Last year we traveled with a Sprint and Verizon card and just went with the one getting the best signal most the time.

As far as the Pre, I'm hoping the put an onscreen keyboard in a software update. I don't like the keyboard but like the rest of it.

I just purchased the Sprint Overdrive, what other questions did you have about it?

I too did get my overdrive, it's NICE.

I was using it at Chasercon in combination with my camera to do our photo blog, the screen is really impressive and makes setup a snap.
