SNOW PHOTOGRAPHY OUTING

Well, Amarillo received 5 more inches of snow on Wednesday so the systems keep on keeping on. I decided to go to Buffalo Lake Wildlife Refuge located about 20 miles SW of Amarillo to get some wintry type photos. I think the day turned out pretty good.

Thank you Chad! I was driving on my way to the refuge, and I passed that car on the side of the road and had to turn back and get a couple of shots of it. It looked cool out there by itself in the snow.

Blacktail Deer?

I counted the points on the deer photo. As near as I can tell, that's a 8-point buck. In some states, they only count the tines (points) on one rack only.

I almost jumped to the conclusion that was a "Whitetail Deer"! But the black band on the tail section caused me to scan the Internet for deer photos. I thought it may have been a "Blacktail Deer", but the photos showed a solid black tail.

It was good you were shooting with a camera and not with a gun!!

I'm No Hunter!

I'm no deer hunter and I've rarely hunt with guns these days. Once I tried going hunting for pheasants, all I came home with were a few feathers and a sore shoulder from the shotgun impacts!

Probably should have looked on the Internet to see what the mule deer looks like. I have seen whitetail deer before. They normally have brown color on top of their tails. But when they signal "Danger" and run away, their white tails are like flags flying in the breeze!

That photo with the mule deer had a white cover on top of the tail with a black band across its "tail" section. That's what threw me for a loop. Thanks for the correction.

No problem Larry ! I have been a deer hunter close to 20 yrs, and was a hunting guide for a while. LOL I better know my deer.

Mule deer are kind a funny, they don't run, they bounce. It's kind a comical to watch someone trying to draw a bead on a bouncing deer. LOL !

Exactly..mule deer bounce instead of run. I'm sure there are whitetail deer down there at the refuge, but I've never seen one. I've seen plenty of mulies though...sometimes 15 or 20 at a time.

By the way, here are a couple more photos from yesterday.


The horse just got up from rolling around in the snow. I got him in the middle of shaking the snow off.

This Western Meadowlark was foraging on the ground for food.
