SKYWARN Recognition Day this weekend!

matt mehle

Hi Everyone,
I know there are a lot of HAMs on this site so this is just a friendly reminder.

Skywarn Recognition Day will start 00Z December 4th and last for 24 hours.

Get on the air and say hi.

For more information and to see what WFO's are participating visit: http://hamradio.noaa.gov

Thanks for all of the reports through out the year.
Matt Mehle

I'll be operating digital modes from DTX operating as K8DTX. We'll have streaming audio web cams along with a live contact log.

http://www.k8dtx.net

We'll be tweeting too using the hashtag #SRD2010.

I'll try to work you but depending on what band, I might be too close with the takeoff angle on my HF antenna here at the EOC (Gap Titan DX).

It would be nice if the offices participating would post a schedule of operating times/frequencies.

You're in luck! Check out http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/hamradio/ and scroll down to the Google map. Clicking on an icon shows the information for each office. Unfortunately, there's no 'list' per se.

I can switch to a hamstick if need be, should be able to get you then.

Those do help some, I guess what I was hoping for was more like what they did for the Route 66 special event and the recent DXpeditions from the former Netherland Antilles islands where they coordinated the actual frequencies each station would be operating on. With the setup I'll have, I can reach darn near anywhere in the US depending on band and time of day. Knowing the exact frequency +/- for QRM helps a lot in situations lik this.

Here ya go, found it at the 11th hour! http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/hamradio/participating_offices.php

Cool, I'm at the EOC, I'll have some others joining me at different times this evening and then again tomorrow afternoon. I'll be running both both PSK and SSB on HF, and 2m for IWX. I am assuming that IWX will be using the same 4 repeaters for the 4 quads that they use for the normal Sywarn net activities. Other than IWX I probably won't be using 2m that much. I might decide to exercise our new IRLP machine a bit though, I'll just have to wait and see.

Oh and I'll probably fire up the browser to take a peek at your live stream as well. I have 3 computers to choose from in my office (comm room).

I'll be operating from the National Weather Center here in Norman under WX5NWC (I guess?) form 1-3PM CST. Hope to hear from some of you guys tomorrow!

What bands/modes?

I'll be operating from the county EOC, I made a few contacts on 80m SSB last night, didn't hear anyone working PSK.

Well I ended up spending most of my time on 7209 Hz (still think the radio is tuned to that). I made a lot of great contacts from MI down to KY and across to AZ and up to MN and even one contact in Australia. Fun day.

I wish my area would do more on this day for spotters. I may even look into coordinating something like a fish fry or a cookout something to bring spotters and the community together, heck maybe even a charity of some sort would be cool!

Had a great time this year, working just PSK31 on 80 and 20 meters. 80 was up all night and then 7:30 came rolling around. BAM, a huge opening to Europe. I stopped trying to get US stations because the waterfall was so dense with Euro/Russian stations. I managed 6 countries and 9 contacts shooting my signal over the pole. Grand total I think we had somewhere around 90 contacts.

It was a lot of fun and great to get across the Atlantic for the first time (for me).
