Rocky's annual chase picnic

I have missed the previous picnics, but it looks like I will be able to be there, since I am on chase trip from May 18th - 27th. Looking forward to it!!

Picnic... to be or not to be??

The latest runs of the GFS suggest the picnic is a go..as do other long range models. There may be a slight possibility that some of the real die hard chasers and tour groups may be out in the high plains of NM&CO. next Sat. but this looks marginal at best with a continued anemic upper wind support.

So.... between now and Thursday evening, I'll be closely monitoring the models and I'll post by Friday's Day 2 at 1730Z if the picnic will be a reality. Keep in mind, this year it will be a BRING YOUR OWN FOOD AND DRINK! I will have a grill for all who brings the meat. I have a new 50" HD TV with both VCR and DVD player and is capable of hooking up your HD camera to see those crispy clear HD video's! I hope to have the pool open by this weekend but its no guarantee. Stay tuned!

Picnic info

Barring some sort of freak change in the model runs, the storm chase picnic scheduled for this Saturday 1pm is still a GO!

Directions from OKC/Norman. Plug in my address: 5504 Hall Rd. NW Piedmont, Okla. 73078 to Mapquest or Google Maps.

Otherwise: I-40 to Kilpatrick TPK and proceed north to the Hwy 3/NW Expressway exit. Make a LEFT, you'll be heading NORTHWEST to the Hwy 4 intersection/Piedmont Rd. Make a RIGHT. You'll be heading NORTH through Piedmont. Mind the speed limits!! Take Piedmont Rd. to Apache Rd./NW 206th st. Make a LEFT. You'll be heading WEST for aproximately 1.5 miles. You'll crest a small hill where there will be 3 roads off to your right. You'll want the THIRD road which is Hall Rd. Make a RIGHT. Hall Rd. is a dirt road with a few notable potholes but still manageable. Take this to the end which will turn right into my driveway.

If you don't want to take the Kilpatrick, you can get off of I-40 at exit 138 which is Mustang Rd./Hwy 4, this will take you through Yukon, just follow this north through Piedmont and proceed with the directions from above.

From the north, the most direct way to go is I-35 to the Covell Rd. exit which is about 20mi. north of OKC and about 6mi. or so north of Edmond. Once your on this road, you simply go straight as this turns into Apache/206th St. You'll go about 23mi. roughly. The only thing is that you'll have about 50 stop signs to deal with. You may be better off coming down to the Kilpatrick which ajoins I-44 and take it WEST to the Rockwell exit, then go north to 206th/Apache, make a LEFT, you'll be heading WEST, proceed accordingly. If you end up getting lost with a sign pointing towards Lubbock, you definitely took a wrong turn... call me with the phone numbers at the bottom of this now absurdly long email and I'll try to get you back on track!

As far as food, please bring what you can, I have two grills so we can cook most anything, no roadkill this year please! My wife just informed me that she purchased three racks of ribs!!! However, this may work best: everyone who's last name starts with A-L bring grilled foods, M-Z you can bring pop and snacks...If your seriously can't afford much to bring, don't fret, we'll have some food, but we'll be limited, so bring what you can.

My HD TV is up and running and the clarity blows my mind, you'll love this so bring those hd video's. The pool is open and should be okay to swim in by Sat. AM, it will be a tad chilly, so swim if you dare.

As always, I look forward in having you out this year, tour groups are especially welcome, why not make it this time???, you'll see far more action here on the new HD TV than a couple of piddly convective attempts out west, Sunday does look better so I'll understand if you leave after a few hours.

Please remember, with kids present, no alcohol is permitted at this particular event.

The final decision will be based on the 1730Z Day 2 outlook on Friday, however I'm quite confident that the risk will be low enough to keep all but the true die hards from heading out west.

***Keep in mind the parameters that need to be met to preclude this get together from happening is a slight risk AND a 2% or greater risk of tornadoes anywhere EAST of I-25 in Co.&NM , SOUTH of I-70 in KS. , NORTH of I-20 in TX. and WEST of US 75 in eastern Okla.***

If you intend on being here and haven't let me know yet, please do so, eh? See you Saturday 1pm!!

Blessings Always! Rocky&family

There is a decently good chance that myself and some other chaser friends from OU will be making our way up for this. I'd guess atleast 4 of us, maybe some more. We will stop and grab some hotdogs and coke or such someplace on the way up!

Looking forward to seeing all you guys there.

Ladies and gentlemen...start your grills!

The chase picnic is officially on ... onless your heading up to Billings, MT to see a few elevated supercells and possible baseball sized hail... actually looking pretty good up there... but no where near worth missing out on this get together.

Remember, I encourage you to bring something to eat... its possible we could have quite a crowd here, and please, plan on taking back what you don't eat.

Again, picnic commences at 1pm.. if you get here early, no big deal, we'll likely be carrying this thing on well into the night so don't feel bad if you can't show ontil later in the day.

Bring an edited dvd.. preferably no more than 20min. max if you like, otherwise, thanks to alot of you, I have a growing library of stuff to choose from, but I have a feeling we'll be watching alot of new video's this year.. I'm especially interested in anything from Greensburg!!

Refer to my last post for directions and other details.

Looking forward in seeing all of you...

Peace Rocky&family

Rocky - sorry us Brits never made it - I'm afraid we took the MT option! Hope you all had a great time, and maybe we'll see you on the road this coming week!

cheers,

Paul.

Picnic was a huge success.. had at least 55 people here, thanks to all who made it possible, especially to my awesome wife Dee..and would you believe, we had several sleep over and currently are ready to enjoy biscuits, gravy, bacon and eggs... and Day 2 has started!!

See you this week on the high plains... looking good for Tue. especially.

As always! Rocky&family

Rocky,
Thanks to you and Dee for opening your home again. It was great to chat with old friends and also to check out some HD video on your new TV.

Take care!

Many thanks to Rocky & Dee for hosting the great chaser gathering yesterday. It was great to see some familiar faces from the past and getting a chance to actually converse rather than waving as the chase often limits interactions to !! Special thanks also to Scott Currens for the opportunity to attend this year. I am glad I made the non-chase trip to Piedmont and back !!

FIanlly was able to make the picnic and had a great time talking with old buddies and some new ones. Thanks Rocky for the hospitality. It was worth the drive. Wish We could have stayed longer.

Let me add my thanks to Rocky and Dee for a great chaser gathering. You guys do a great service to the chaser community by holding this event each year, and I was very pleased to finally be able to attend.

I can also say, for those of you who were unable to attend, that you are going to be seeing some great stuff when this year's highlights videos come out - several folks there had some awesome video of beautifully backlit tornadoes!

Adding my thanks to Rocky and Dee for their wonderful hospitality and Dee's legendary table skills! Once again, enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of seeing old friends and watching the latest videos.
Long may the tradition continue!!!

Same goes for me, thanks Rocky, Dee, Amber, Leif, and all the animals. Leif's developed quite a sense of humor since he's gotten older, lol.
