Reed Timmer in Argentina Storm Chasing

Reed Timmer??

Reed Timmer or Timmer Reed?? I have the same problem. Kinda like an ex-girl friend you would hate to forget! :D

I did a Bing search for "Timmer Reed" and I came up with 77,600 results for "Reed Timmer". Did the same thing on Google. Did a search for "Timmer Reed" and got about 606,000 results. Man he is everywhere!! :D

I was down in Argentina 3 years ago hunting storms with the BBC. If you can sock away the bucks, Argentina is a great place to go. It's a 10 hour flight from the US but you only change a time zone or two plus the weather is warm. Right now I could use some warm weather! If you're like me you want to be filming storms year around. To do that you'll have to travel outside the US.

If you don't speak Spanish, well, heck, good time to learn ! Plus, it will come in handy when you chase hurricanes in the Yucatan, Baja or Puerto Rico. There's another world below the equator without the crowds of the Plains. Heidi is right - Argentina is a great choice. You'll have the time of your life there!

Although I haven't chased supercells in Argentina, I have chased coastal storms at the southern tip of Patagonia in Argentina and Chile. I was filming there in 2007 and there is so much wind that the trees literally grow at an angle.

We experienced lots of great people and some truly wicked weather, the worst of which came while I was on a 54 foot sailboat, sailing around the notorious Cape Horn. This place has a reputation for have the most violent seas in the world. It was as incredible as it was nauseating.

Argentina is a great country with some extreme weather. It is especially great if you like good beef! Mmmm.

Memory Help?

Here's a good way to remember his name: Think of a bamboo REED, named TIMMER, blowing in the vortex spin of a EF-4 tornado in OK! Dominate!! :D

If Reed gets into an EF-4, it's probably the last time you ever see Reed... ;)

Good day all,

...This place has a reputation for have the most violent seas in the world. It was as incredible as it was nauseating.

LOL ... I was watching that just the other day as I have a boxed set of Angry Planet a buddy gave me. You were "booting" to say the least, all that storm-at-sea stuff going on, and there's GK hunched over the railing ;-)

Awesome stuff, by the way!

As for the folks in Argentina, that's awesome they got a wedge on the first day there.

I see alot of chasers (basically the lucky ones with the time and resources on their hands) going full-time and international chasing. Yes, Reed indeed has a lot riding on him (especially from DSC and such).

As for the comments about "expensive gear" and "bad areas" ... We have enough of those right here in the USA ... Let alone Mexico / S America, Asia, etc.

I just checked out TVN's stream and they are passing through some little town. The sky has that "explosive look" that I have seen on big days in the United States.

Tracking a Storm!!

Looks like Reed Timmer and Gang are tracking a nice looking storm. A cam image taken at 4:01 PM, 01/05/10, showed a nice sun-lit cloud with a nice base. Now it just changed. Cam image at 4:07 pm now shows how the cloud is tilted over due to the strong jet stream airflow. Reed is probably wishing he was back in OK! :D

Reed reported a large wallcloud almost on the ground rotating clockwise! Darkness is setting in now so hopefully they'll get something lightning illuminated. The meso looked amazing!

Hi all!

Lurking off......I am glad this topic came up. Pretty exciting stuff to see people exploring those "less common" grounds for chasing. This brings me to a question...I have thought about the possibility of going down there at some point to chase, but what sites are best to use in forecast preparation? I am not talking about "in the field". I mean just at the hotel. I, for one, prefer the old way we used to chase in the 90's before all the techno-gizmos....don't get me wrong, they are nice, I just like the "bare bones" method. Anyway, thoughts?

Jay:)

Posting from free wifi at a gas station in Argentina. Had a great day on the 5th. Here's a time-lapse video and still of an incredible supercell near Rio Cuarto. I'll post more when I get time to put it all together. Nice roads, food, people, and storms. A great break from winter.
