"Recreational chaser" What's the difference?

OK, OK...just trying to poke fun...I don't think the issue is a big one...I mean J.B. did bring up the subject, but only after a one time mention of it on a TV show. I think there are more serious threads in the past that go into the nature and crowd issues. I think the simple term "recreational chaser" was just a term...and basically shouldn't be taken with more than a grain of salt.

The guys writing the show (much less the professional narrator) are very likely not even remotely related to the Storm Chase community, so really it's more of an outside way to describe the hoards of chasers these guys ran into on the 7th in a way which would adequately describe them. It happens, it's not a big deal. As with most other forms of drama in the chaser community and any other possible communities for that matter, there are just a bunch of egos which have to be stroked from time to time and when they get hurt....well you end up with what Stormtrack is like during the offseason.

I agree. I don't care what people label me at all. I chase because I love it and I don't care if I get called crazy or whatever. I just wanted others opinions and others take on what they thought about the recreational comment. I wasn't offended at all, and I realize that the narrator doesn't narrate for the chase community. This thread got a lot of responses and also got a lot of people thinking, and that's what I was going after.

I totally agree with this statement Mikel. Unfortunately things will continue to be this way & that won't change. The chasing circus will only continue, esp. if there are only 1-2 storms. With that being said, I do consider myself a recreational chaser. I wasn't offended by the comment at all when watching the show.

"Chaser" in 2009 is about as loose a term as anything I've heard in my 37 years. Attach whatever adjective you want to it. The results are what matter, not the nametag.

As far as Storm Chasers use of the term "recreational chaser", obviously they're going to do everything they can think of to make Timmer seem a god among mortal chasers. That's Hollywood. If you take offense to it, then stop watching the show. Sitting glued to it, you're a part of the machine that makes it all tick.

We chase because we love it.. whether as scientists/researchers, beauty lovers, adrenaline junkies or sky detectives who love to make detailed analysis/predictions and see how well they turn out..
The common denominator is love of storms.
For all of us, regardless of our chaser posture, there is an element of fun and recreation.
So the "recreational" label fits us all in one way or the other.

Honestly, I have no problem being called a "recreational chaser" and I don't know why anyone would. I just think a lot of chasers want to feel more important than they are. Just another thing for the whiners to post on their Facebook.

There isn't a difference. If one does exist then it is only a psychological manifestation of stereotypes. For instance someone who chases/observes a storm three times or less during a year could be a better chaser than someone who chases/observes storms more than three times a year. It's just how people are.
