Opinions regarding Nikon D800 or Canon 5D Mark iii

It's more like 700 dollar budget for everything, camera plus lens/lens kit. I've been using an Olympus E-510 since Christmas 2007 and I really need a new camera. One that will give me quality lightning pictures by actually focusing properly at distance/in low light. There's just so much out there it is hard find where to start, I thought this might be the best place.

Double postin' here. For entry level budgets, if you want a DSLR snag a used Nikon D5200 from KEH.com for $450, and try to find a Tamron 17-50 for $300 (the non-VC version, because it has nicer optics). It will be very hard to beat that combo without spending 2-3 times as much. Don't be afraid to buy used, especially from a great reseller like KEH.

...I've been wondering for awhile how many chasers have ditched their dedicated camcorders and exclusively use a DSLR for both pictures and video now?

If I can find a nice zoom rocker like on my camcorder to zoom smoothly on a DSLR/lens...I'd stop taking a camcorder.

I'm sure both cameras will do the job, but the most important tool for great photography is the one right behind the camera.
