NCAR to be closed?

Thanks, Randy. The NBC story you linked is pretty similar to the original one I posted - the Denver TV station is NBC, so I am guessing the network largely picked up the story from the local report. Mods, perhaps these threads can be combined?

Yes, I agree; please put it all under this thread. Admins, I hope you don't see my remarks below as "too political" but, rather, fair game for discussion with ST readers.

Concerning the content of this whole matter, however, I am really pissed at the ill-thought-out "reasoning" and short-sightedness of the administration's actions. This matter "really hits close to home" for me because both the National Science Foundation and UCAR were sources for funding of much of my graduate research at NSSL over fifty years ago. You just don't "erase" out of existence something with that kind of long-standing history because you think it's run by a nest of "left-wing lunatics" (which is purely a present-day political bias and completely without merit or factual evidence). When it comes to carrying on apolitical science (for scientific sake!), is anything really sacred or untouchable anymore by people who have no knowledge whatsoever about the profession(s) they are so un-caringly destroying?

DOGE was bad enough as far as ill-informed people in high places of power intruding into science...like weather and climate science. Enough is enough already! These kinds of mistakes will be extremely difficult to reverse in the future, and scientific advancement may irreparably suffer as a result, given the enormous costs involved to carry out such research.
