Ok, I need to get some mobile wind measuring equipment. I know InSpeed makes good equipment. I want something to leave up all the time, so it needs to be sturdy. Any ideas? I have some small mounting capabilites on the roof with the rack on the top of the Jeep. I want something low profile.

Your help appreciated, please...

I am taking an intense interest in weather as I am taking up soaring as a sport. I am already into some electric R/C flying.

I would like to get a carry anemometer for under $100.00 to help me determine flying conditions.

There are some hand-held types offered at this site:

I'd greatly appreciate knowing which model would give me the best wind speed reading for the price, or is that possible for under $100.00? :p

Is the cup style more preferred?

Thank you very much.

P.S. I am located in Texas, so the wind can shift direction as easily as one sneezes. :D

Cup style is more preferred. With the impeller models (like the Kestrels), you have to get it pointed directly into the wind stream otherwise it won't get a good reading. Kestrels are still good though, especially if you want to get one that you can carry around your neck or put in your pocket. Several models measure temperature and dewpoint, also.

For your use, I would recommend the InSpeed handheld model. It's cheap, works really well, and it's easy to perform maintenance. I can't remember the price, but I know it's well under $100. I've had one for several years and love it. I have one of the mag mount models for chasing also.
