I noticed the thread regarding Tim V. is gone... or I can't seem to find it. If it was deleted, I think the last few posts regarding finding Tim V. a co-admin were of value & should probably be recovered. But that's just me.

My replies to that thread bounce into la, la land.
My thought were that if Tim doesn't want to mess with this board for whatever reason whether it be because he is bored with it, it's a waste of time or there is no profit in it that he should either close up shop or allow a co-admin.
I fully understand getting bored with something and or it becoming a waste of time but I disagree that you should just leave it hanging.

Trying to remember my original post, I stated that Tim seems like he has a lot on his plate with his books, software, consulting, and other endeavors. I understand that ST is more of a hobby and doesn't put food on the table, which is why I suggested that it would be nice if he could find a co-admin - preferably someone with experience in servers / forum software.

The discussion about Tim's absence is fine and doesn't violate any rules. No one is trying to discourage constructive criticism, and we'd encourage users to continue that particular discussion in this thread, should anyone choose to do so. However, there were two separate discussions in that thread that were getting intertwined. The discussion about a specific post that was deleted this morning was in violation of the site rules.
If a specific post is deleted or corrective action is taken against a user, any concerns should be addressed via a PM to the MODS or Tim. Public discussion or contesting of a specific administrative action has never been acceptable on the open forums. It is kind of hard to restore specific posts in that thread when several quoted one of the posts that were in violation of the rules, which just confuses the reader after all of the editing is said and done. So, if everyone wants to continue the discussion about have a co-administrator, etc. here, that is fine, but hopefully this note serves as an explanation of why some of the other content had to be removed.

I encourage anyone that has any issues with ST or the way one of the mods runs things, to PM me so we can discuss it. A lot of times one mod will delete something before a lengthy discussion goes on about it in the mod forum. The previous thread was in violation since it openly questions a moderators action. That mod has PM'd the OP and stated this. We are currently discussing the best way to go about this in direct regards to Tim's presence. Anyone that has an issue, just PM me instead of starting 100 threads on why something is getting deleted. I have offered an olive branch numerous times in threads and specifically said "anyone with any issues PLEASE PM one of the mods", yet people still feel the need to publicly dispute our actions. I understand not everyone will be happy with the way things are run or handled, but if you fail to at least meet me half way then that gives me and the other mods the feeling that you are intentionally disregarding our requests and attempting to smear us and pointing the "censorship" finger.

I feel as though we are getting caught up in the minutia of process and losing track of the big picture. Stormtrack's national past-time may be the annual running of the drama llamas, but I don't think the concerns that have cropped up recently are over dramatic. There is a specific ongoing board issue (big enough to prevent some users from figuring out how to log in to the board) that requires administrative involvement that has apparently gone unresolved for quite a while. This might be because it is an unusually complicated issue to resolve, but the users haven't heard anything about it either way. (If the links to the vBulliten help forums are any indication, apparently it is a fairly simple fix). If the reason they've gone unresolved is a lack of an administrator logging in to check his messages in over a month, that's a valid concern.
For the most part, Storm Track is an excellent place for chasers to converse. It's well organized and, with the occasional use of the handy 'ignore' feature, is a great tool for learning and sharing knowledge. It's certainly got a better signal to noise ratio than any of the other boards I frequent and it even occasionally makes me pine for the days of Usenet past. But the users do need for administration to occur on an ongoing and regular basis to fix the issues that the moderators can't touch due to access restrictions.
The users need moderation, too, or else this place turns into Usenet circa right around the time all the AOL people showed up.
But try to remember that if you are a moderator and remove comments that point out how absent administration appears to be at times (something that even the moderators hint at with frustration if you can read between the lines), it's going to disappoint some of the users. Yes, of course, this board is owned and operated by a sole proprietor, and as such it is isn't a democracy. But this old ship was built by Hoadley and piloted for years by Marshall; it's fitting that people would want to continue to see her steered with the same diligence and concern.
I noticed that Tim skipped out on teaching his scheduled class this year at Chasercon at the last minute without explanation; if he has some extenuating circumstances going on, letting us know that (even if he has to be vauge) might go a long way towards users not fretting about board administration. We all have crap happen in our lives that makes it difficult to keep up with everything; most people can sympathize.

I'll reiterate what I posted in the other thread about the ongoing site upgrade/log-in issues. I sent an email to Tim several days ago to his private email account, and the matter was also discussed on the administrative boards as well. I haven't received a reply to my email. At this point that's all that we, as moderators, can do since we have limited vBulletin board software access.

IMO, this forum at this time, is as good as it has been in many years. Keep up the good work all involved! Maybe that's only because canebeard hasn't been here for a while.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the moderation team & Tim... I just think he could use some help on the admin side. I'm also happy with some of the content I've been seeing. It's just the things like the search functionality, approval of new members, and forum installation / maintenance that I think needs a little more love.

I agree with Scott, Stormtrack's content is great right now! Sure, there needs to be some admin stuff taken care of, and Tim is the only one that can do it, but I'm not concerned with what's going on in Tim's backyard nor do I feel the need to get in his business. I also see no reason for anyone to get worked up over a little moderation. It's the moderators job to keep things in line with the rules and they are doing a great job.
