Looking to go on my first chase in May

For the best online resource I’d say you’re already there, this forum is a treasure trove where you can learn a lot about storms! I think you can acquire a lot of knowledge right here in this section alone, look through the topics and dive into the ones you think would be the most useful.

If you’d like a good book I’d personally recommend this one:

http://www.weathergraphics.com/chasing/

I found it to be an excellent resource for learning the basics and I think it could prove very useful to any new chaser in grasping the fundamentals of storm chasing. Read the whole thing before your trip and I think it will benefit your learning curve, take it with you on your trip and you can have a handy resource at the ready.

And while I don’t personally own it this DVD looks to be just the thing you’re seeking:

https://stormandsky.com/stormanalysis101

Sometimes seeing things visually and having them explained to you can be the most effective teacher. The guy selling the DVD is an accomplished chaser and he definitely knows what he’s talking about. He has some great footage from his career and puts it to use here in an educational capacity.

Regarding fatigue if you leave that early you should still be able to get plenty of rest for the next day. For many chasers long drives are just a part of the game and personally I can’t recall the number of marathon drives I’ve done over the years, some exceeding over 1,000 miles on chase day alone. With a full night’s sleep and waking up in the target area you should not only be fine but also the envy of many other chasers!

Thanks Michael. I do have a few hundred for reserve funds just in case so Im not overly worried about that. Im more concerned with fatigue like you stated. My plan will be to leave around 4AM so I can reach my target area in time to get a room and a full nights rest. One bonus is being a firefighter I am used to broken sleeping patterns.

Can you suggest a good resource for storm structure and behavior info?
Here is something that I found incredibly helpful

You guys are awesome! I will jump into these tonight and will get that DVD as well.

Thank you so much for the tips and advice. Wish I found this site long ago.

Tim, hold off on the buying the DVD's. I have that one and a couple more you can have. Just PM me with your address and I'll get it there ASAP. I'm also a professional firefighter who has no trouble getting back to sleep after runs. Storm chasing is a different animal. It wears you out a little bit more each day. You are probably younger than me so maybe that won't affect you as much......

Thank Todd I just sent it to you. Very much appreciated.

Well I'm a little nervous now about fatigue but I'm just going to listen to my body and do what I need to do. If I need to take a day in the middle and rest up I will. I will be well rested before I leave too. I am 48 so it is a concern. Im hopping the adrenaline of the chases will keep me up. That and some energy drinks. Gonna be an interesting adventure for sure.

Awesome that you are a firefighter as well. Thanks for helping a brother out.
