Jeff Wear, 27, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away on July 11, 2005 in a collision near Kilgore, Texas as he returned from chasing Hurricane Dennis. At 11:05 am that morning his 1999 Mercury Mystique hydroplaned into oncoming traffic on I-20 near S.H. 42. The other driver fortunately was not hurt.
Jeff was the first member of the Stormtrack forums and was among our top 20 posters. He was the son of Robert and Marilyn Wear of Turlock, California.
Stormtrack has established a memorial fund for his family to help relieve some of the financial burden. A full 100% of donations go to his family (not counting Paypal fees, etc).
EDIT: Donation program is closed.
As of Friday we have raised $623.79. I did not get the envelope out yesterday but have cut a new check for $573.79, to be sent today with a sympathy letter and 8 pages of tribute from our members. The remaining $50 has been set aside for flowers. They'll receive all this on Monday. A followup check will be sent in another week as more donations are received.
Jeff's relatives, Dave and Therese, informed me that Jeff's parents are clearing out the apartment in Norman and will be getting back to California shortly. The airlines would not give them bereavement fares because instead of going round-trip they were going one way to haul his belongings... :x thus they are conceivably out of about $2000 in airfare alone. Their relatives said Jeff's parents "are overwhelmed by the outpourings of admiration as well as support. It is an incredibly difficult time for them, especially being all alone since all the family is in California."
