Into The Storm Movie [was "Is anyone else worried that..."]

The Ghost Train is an express ride directly into the vortex of doom!

Inflow jets can follow a straight line toward the tornado. It looks like they are usually tangent to the core of the circulation though once they meet it. You're well within the tornado's circulation at that point though. At least from the visual examples I've seen. Otherwise you've got a big cyclonic vortex right? With inward and tangential velocities from a variety of influences like friction at the surface and differential pressure.

But yeah, the movie was definitely being... well a movie. The tornadoes were holding out vacuum cleaner nozzles to the characters. It was more like somebody shot out an airplane window rather than an approaching vortex at times. I'm having nightmares now imagining Jim Reed running up to an Into The Storm vortex.

Oh yeah, and tornadoes coming out randomly from any "dark" sky. They weren't even that dark! It was just kind of a mediocre grey or even fairly bright day with overcast skies, and WOAH TORNADO!!! I'm sitting under some light grey overcast skies now... and watching all around for tornadoes....
 
I certainly wasn't itching to see Into the Storm as I was to see Twister way back when, and frankly, for good reason. The movie feels like a student project. Like they downloaded a bunch of storm chaser clips off of Youtube and tried to weave a narrative through it, only they somehow managed to snag a couple $70,000 cinema cameras and got the support of a decent effects house. And while I thought the CGI was above par, it didn't wow me as much as it made me wish I *was* watching actual storm chasing clips on a giant screen.
And while there was a nod to actual terminology in the movie, it seems like the writer again just watched recordings of tornado outbreak news coverage that had been uploaded to Youtube for reference.
The fact that it's a box office bomb currently (home video might help it break even) is a testament to the level inspiration it will provide to upcoming chasers. Little to none.
 
Thanks for clearing that out regarding inflow. So, although being a movie interpretation of the effect it isn't as ridiculous as I thought.

It still, obviously, is quite ridiculous when Allison (reference to Allison House?) is holding on to the car door and is getting sucked up-and-into a tornado while the other guy is getting dragged on the ground into the tornado. Not to mention that he is in the same size from the viewers perspective, although he is getting higher and higher up (which would make the view of him smaller).

Another interesting question this movie raised to me is that if something in fact gets sucked into a tornado. How would it be transported then? This will be a very theoretical questions since, I assume, no one really knows. I mean, lets say you throw a whiskeybottle into a 50 yard wide, strong tornado - "and it never hits the ground!". Would it circulate around the edge of the tornado or get closer and closer to the center. Would it perhaps, instead, go further out from the tornado and get thrown in an upward motion following the trajectory of the rotation?

If it would get sucked up, I assume it would follow the updraft as long as it supported (i.e. depending on how strong the updraft is) and then fall back down again, following the down draft?

Another question that comes to my mind after the movie and re-thinking tornado videos I have seen. Is there a lifting effect outside the tornado as well? I'm thinking of the airplanes in the movie and just the fact that heavy debris could stay aloft far outside a tornado. There is an obvious lifting effect near a tornado (as can be seen on Scott McPartlands tornado vs house video).

Basically, it would be interesting to know the x-y-z force parameters inside and near a tornado. One is obviously leading into the tornado (inflow, the sucking effect), one is the lift, and one is the directional force caused by the rotating winds. I wish I could draw this, to make it clearer!

Well upon going from different sites such as rotten tomatoes, imdb, and Wikipedia this movie was considered a box office success with a budget of 50 million dollars it brought in over 150 million dollars from all around the world. It should increase over with the dvd sales. I like the Into The Storm page on facebook and so I get the latest updates. One of the updates shows Mr. Reed Timmer on the extra features explaining the Dominator. I give Reed Credit with his marketing ship. I watched the movie a second time and still find it funny. Its one of those movies I can shut my brain off and enjoy.I have also read there are talks for a sequel so we shall see.If I was the director i would have made the film either follow the Storm Chasers or the dad not both. I will probably get the Bluray just because I own every movie about natural disasters so I need this for my Tornado section.

Many are worried about the future of this forum yet people are belittled for contributing. Nice.

I saw the movie when it came out and agree with the general consensus. To me it was a Lifetime Television movie with a larger FX budget that happened to use tornadoes as the antagonist(s). The two Yahoo chasers made the movie. The main characters were simply the single parent doesn't communicate with his resentful kid and everyone sings kumbayah together after surviving a disaster.

When I read your comment there were two possible scenarios I could think of.

1. You found his story so interesting that you felt compelled to make him aware of how extraordinarily interesting it was AND you are one of the few people on the Internet who is not aware of the sarcastic "Cool story bro!" meme.

2. You thought his story was boring or silly and wanted to use a phrase from a very well-known meme to make a snarky reply to someone you feel is inferior to you, at least on this forum or in the chasing community.

If #1 is correct I owe you an apology. If #2 is right you owe Mtobin an apology.

I apologize for my comment coming across as rude and disrespectful, that was not my intention. That was my way of agreeing with MTobin, and if it didn't seem that way I'm sorry to not only Mtobin, but to anyone else who thought I was being disrespectful.
