On April 6th, 2006 we followed a storm into Jasper County Missouri which prompted a tornado warning followed by reports of a tornado near Ausbury Missouri. We were on Highway 43 north of Joplin Missouri when I snapped several photographs, this was one of them. This was looking in the direction of Ausbury, and I didn't even know I got this until later that night when I got home and was looking through the pictures.

I don't know if this is the tornado, it was at sunset and was dark out so the view wasn't that great. Either way, I found it to be an interesting picture and who knows whether or not this is the tornado that touched down around Ausbury.

We did pass through Ausbury on our way home and there was some minor damage in the area including a semi tractor-trailer that was flipped over.

I was just thinking about that day earlier. Interesting picture to say the least. Did you ever go over to Asbury the next day to look at the damage? I think I have a picture of where the semi flipped over. I will have to look to make sure.

I never did make it back over to Ausbury the following day, I'm not sure why I didn't. If you have that picture of the semi and don't mind emailing it to me, I'd love to have a copy of it.

From this picture, I would definitely have to say yes, this is indeed a tornado, that you have photographed and 95% likely that it is the same tornado that tore through Ausbury, I have a feeling though that this tornado may have been partially on the ground when this picture was taken, because if you look closely at the base of the funnel, right in the centre, there is a tiny spot that shows you couls see any remaining daylight/lightning illumantion, and so I feel that you hay have caught the tornado, just as it was touching down or as it was about to lift up again :)

Thank you for sharing the picture with us all, it's a pretty cool pic :)

Is this a photo, or a video capture? Looks like a video cap with nightshot on...

Hard to say without having been there and knowing what part of the storm it's looking at, but it looks like it could be a tornado with an RFD notch in the foreground.

You should go back to the original location you took the picture, look in that direction and then try and drive over along what would have been the path based on storm motion and see if any path you may find coincides with your picture location.

I remember that day as well and seem to remember seeing pictures like that while I was volunteering at the Springfield, MO WFO. I was chasing that day as well, but barely missed the tornado in Asbury, MO. Here is a link to my video, not the best quality, :) but it works.
