I'm putting together a slide show presentation on tornado safety, I'm looking to find a downloading avi format clip of the infamous overpass video near Andover on April 26th, 1991 where the news crew took shelter under an overpass as the tornado passed.

The only thing I can seem to find is on youtube..

Thanks,

Joey

Hey Joey, how's it going buddy? :)

Did you have a look around on Discovery or contactPioneer Stdios? :)

I remember that they were the ones that did the filming/editing of other series' that have beenm on Discovery, and I would imagine that they would be able to send you that clip in the AVI format, and if not, I would imagine, that they could point you in the right direction :)

I hope that this is of some help or another, good luck :)

Willie

They didn't film it and unless they bought the complete copyrights to it, they can't give it to you legally.

As mentioned, you would need to go to the original copyright owner to get permission to use it. For what your wanting it for, I can't see why they would have any issues with it.

I can't resist asking this: You are going to use this as an example of what not to do during a tornado, right?

If that's the idea, I wonder whether you should even bother to show that video, because it could cause some people think that doing so is fine. I guess it would ultimately depend on your audience, though. (Weren't some of the fatalities in May 3rd, '99 from people who sought shelter under highway overpasses?)

Correct, I have about 4 slides dedicated to why one should not seek shelter underneath an overpass.. having that clip is not critical, I think it works just fine without it.

Because they weren't actually IN the tornado itself. After you see it beside the road rolling a vehicle around, it travels off back to the left of frame, and all they got hit with were inflow winds in to the tornado. Possibly some of the VERY OUTER weaker winds, but that was it.

Also, that overpass was one of the more rare ones that actually have little cubby holes up in the girders. Most overpasses do not.

Actually, they were in the tornado but the weaker west side of the tornado as it moved northeast.

Not only is that my opinion from watching that video countless times, I have heard the same thoughts about it from various other storm chasers, and meteorologists as well. I believe it was a very close call, but no cigar.

A study done by the National Weather Service concluded that the tornado was parallel to the highway when it passed, the people underneath were only affected by inflow winds and the fringes of the tornado's circulation.

Greg posted a link on the 1st page to the study, it's a great read and recommend reading it.
