• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

IEEE 1394 firewire to USB

I ordered a new laptop which did not have a 1394. I have also ordered a 1394 to USB cable for downloading video. Has any one done this and have you seen any issues?

I have seen this before but could not find reviews on them. I'm very interested in hearing an update regarding usability of this.

Every Thing I have found says you can not convert Firewire to USB even though there are some out there that sell cables. I have read blog after blog and they all end up saying it will not work. IMO the express card is the best way to go but when ordering make sure you can get drivers for 64bit Vista or Win 7. I purchased one and have not found the drivers for it yet......Good Luck

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it would have to be done a certain way. Many of the old PCI card slots ran on the USB bus anyway. They just used a different connector and some extra hardware. You're just going to need hardware in between the Firewire and USB to do the conversion. Some universal laptop docks now include firewire but interface with the laptop via USB.

I'm betting *somebody* out there makes a little device that looks just like a USB hub, but has 1394 on the input and USB on the output. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this cable Robert ordered has the necessary conversion hardware built in, just like a USB to RS-232 or USB to Parallel converter. Those aren't just magical pin-to-pin adapters. There are chipsets in line that make the conversion possible.

Saying that its simply impossible is just silly. Its just a matter of the right hardware, and the right software. Plenty of USB devices stream, there's nothing magic about firewire that makes it the only option in that realm, so there's no reason that such a conversion wouldn't work just fine for a video camera.

EDIT: After a bit of research, I can say that such devices do exist, but they're hard to find and rather expensive. Here's a cheaper alternative.

This device plus This device.

This should work for laptops like my Toshiba that have no express card slot, or the slot is already in use for other stuff.
