How to enable Search?

Tony Colley

I can find no search capability on any page within the forums. I have tried both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I have stumbled upon posts that show it next to Forum Tools/Thread Tools, but the only thing that occasionally shows up there (for me) is Display Modes. The FAQ just says look for it in the navigation bar on "most" pages. Still, I can find no page which has a Search anywhere. I've even tried "Ctrl+F" to look for "search" within various pages (e.g. the Main page, a Forum page, a Thread page) to no avail.

Is search only available for members (i.e. those who have donated)?

Near the top of the screen, you should see "User CP, FAQs/Rules, Community, Calendar, New Posts, Search, Quick Links, and Log Out" in a blue horizontal box. Do you see these? I see that you just signed up, so perhaps it has something to do with your new account? I'll defer to Tim if that's the case.

The top bar on this page says: User CP, FAQs/Rules, Community, Calendar, Quick Links, Log Out.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Tony. We'll see if we can get that fixed up for you (and other new members that might be seeing the same thing).

Wonder if it has to do with the screen resolution he is using?

Well, he has both the links that are on the ends of the menu, so I don't think they are being pushed off the side of the page due to a screen resolution. The two that he's missing are search functions. The Search drop down of course, and the New Posts link is also just a filtered search. More than likely a switch got flipped in the new users group that Tim just has to flip back.

When I first signed up I didn't have the search function showing either. It didn't show up until I made my donation to stormtrack.

The donation is not required in order to obtain search functionality. Users are put into different groups, and for some reason the "New user" group has the search functionality turned off. When you donated you were put into the "Stormtrack supporter" group which doesn't have that problem. Tim, the admin, should be able to fix that once he gets a chance.

From the responses, I realize that donating is not (intended to be) required to get search functionality ... but now that I have gotten around to donating, the Search feature has magically appeared. Sorry I cannot now test out if any fixes made to the "new member" group work.

Things that make you go hmmmm!?!

Search is gone again and there is no record on here that I donated. WTF???

As far as I know, Tim disabled search yesterday to free up some board resources since the forum was being slammed (i.e. very busy yesterday with the big chase day). See his post in the "Stormtrack Slow?" thread at http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/showpost.php?p=268659&postcount=15

To make it easy, here is the quote:
I noticed it was particularly bad this evening so I rebooted the server (0420 UTC). I suspected a DDOS but checked all the IP connections and it appears most likely that we had some stalled processes bottlenecking the server. I did the reboot and have turned off search temporarily to conserve CPU cycles until we've made sure things are under control (you can still search via Google... e.g. lightbars site:stormtrack.org).

If we have to get a new server to handle the load, we'll do it, but hopefully it's just something simple.

Tim

This includes
"New Posts" at the top (which is now missing)
...but also, under your username/member page:
Find all posts by username
Find all threads started by username
Find all thanked posts by username
Find all posts thanked by username

Well my search option was always there until sometime recently cause it's not there anymore...

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't read page 2. Thanks for clarifying, Jeff...
