How Many Threads On Stormtrack Are 'New'?

Jeremy Den Hartog

I just have to ask, how many threads here are actually 'new' - in other words topics that have never been discussed before anywhere on this site? The reason I ask is because I was more or less mocked/disrespected in the 'regulate storm chasing' thread here because I had brought up a topic that apparently had been discussed several times already but if you think about it I bet probably at least 50% of the topics posted on this site are things that have already been discussed here.

I must say, I'm a bit disappointed in how unfriendly some of the people here can be to newcomers (that's not to say I haven't met some friendly people here as well - but notice I said newcomer and I didn't say newbie). For some reason on this site apparently its not what you know or even what you've experienced but more of how long ago you registered to the site and how many posts you have here or at the very least weather or not you have an established online presence to be considered a 'seasoned' chaser. In other words, IMO just because you registered on the site back in 2004 doesn't necessarily mean you know more or are more experienced then someone who registered more recently.

While I understand it can be annoying to have the same topics brought up over and over again, if it really annoys you then just don't reply to that topic. In other words just because it isn't new for you doesn't mean its not new for someone else (not to mention things can and do change). Yes, I acknowledge I probably should have searched before posting a new topic but just because its already been posted doesn't mean I shouldn't be entitled to an opinion on that topic. Would it really have made a big difference if I posted a reply to one of the older topics instead of starting a new one?

Anyhow, enough of my rant but I feel the need to point this out as it seems to be a big problem with some here.

Imagine it from the other end: A charter member who helped build this infant into the monster it's become, only to have the majority shun me aside. The reason I am the way I am is because I helped build this beast, and whether the monster likes me now or not I could care less. Believe me, I'm just as disappointed with this place as anyone. But I keep trying to contribute and get it back to where it needs to be.

I hear you and I definitely appreciate all of your efforts...

Jeremy, those of us who have been doing this a while have seen people like you come and go. They come in, shake things up a little with their opinions and then get butthurt when they learn their topic has been discussed time and again and/or is not a popular subject. Regulating storm chasers is not a good topic to bring up among the storm chasing community. Regulating the use of helmets is not popular in the Hell's Angels forum either probably.

This is an established community full of all types. You can't expect your opinion to be agreed upon by all chasers and frankly, most new people here need to build their resume a little before any controversial topics are generated in MY opinion.
I've been at this a long time and I wouldn't even bring up the topic of regulation of this HOBBY.

So, as you did to me in your other thread, go get behind that keyboard and give me the what-is about MY opinion and we'll see where this thread goes.

Jeremy, it's just beating a dead horse. Say for instance, you want to know what members think of lightbars. Instead of creating a new thread, just look at the multitudes of threads that already exist. Then, when you read them, you'll know what others think on the matter and they won't have to repeat themselves. It's ok though...We all bring up topics that have been posted before. I just think the recreated threads that bring the most grief are the ones that have a lot of controversy hanging on their back.

EDIT: Hope that makes sense.

Maybe your right. I must say though its not like I'm sitting at home crying about it. However, that's not to say I'm going to sit by as someone is disrespecting me without reason either (aside from me being a newcomer and posting a topic that had already been discussed which annoyed some people).

And Steve I understand its a community full of all types (and thats fine), but like I said if the topic bothers you then just don't reply in that topic. Should be simple as that.

Like Kendra said, learn to be thick skinned and listen to what were telling you. You may think you're being disrespected, but were just being honest and upfront with you. Trust us, and you'll be ok.

Jeremy, Im rather new to the Chasing community and havent really made a name for myself sort of speak, but I have learned sometimes you gotta bite your lip when it comes to things like this and grow a thicker skin like Kendra said. Face it, a thread like this is not going to solve anything, its just going to stir up more crap. Just my .02 cents.

I understand that (and stirring things up is not what I'm trying to do). I'm the type of person who is going to express my opinion. If it stirs things up so be it but in this case I feel something needed to be said. Maybe I should be more thick-skinned but then at the same time some people here need to lay off of the 'superiority complex' they seem to have as well.

That being said, just so people don't think I'm really trying to stir things up I will no longer reply to this topic as I have made my point. If you don't like this topic or if you are annoyed and feel I'm just trying to stir things up then just don't reply to this topic and let it die off.

Allot of the topics here are re-peat. I have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes members [old and new] don't frequent a thread while its hot and thus interesting or valuable input can be missed. So I generally don't mind if the same subject comes up from time to time as long as it doesn't get excessive.

As others have mentioned, this is a tough crowd. Few are afraid to speak their minds. Credibility is the only way to earn respect. I can think of new members who have signed up and their first posts were a collection of amazing photos they have taken over the years, and they were very warmly welcomed.

Others come on here with nothing to show for themselves other than a loud mouth and that simply is not tolerated.

One solution could be a frequently-posted topics forum. Then, if a member starts a new thread on a frequently-posted topic anywhere on ST, the moderators can quickly merge it with one of the existing threads in that forum and post a note about the thread merge.
