Well,

I tried my hand at some lake effect snow chasing tonight. Everything worked ok for me...however...I don't know how to use GPSGate correctly...obviously :o

How do I make it work?

I don't know much about computer, ports, gps splitters...etc....but what I do know is this...

If I plug in my gps puck into the usb port closest to me, the MS Streets & Trips works, but the GRLevel3 won't recognize my gps...

If I plug the gps puck into the usb port furthest from me, the GRLevel3 recognizes my gps, but MS Streets & Trips doesn't.

Enter....GPSGate!

What the heck is a virtual com port...and how do I make it work? Ive tried about 50 different combos....but no dice...

Someone help?

Thanks!

Windows reinstalls the device and creates a separate COM port when you switch between USB ports, so swapping between them is switching the COM port. Streets and Trips has probably been configured for one COM port while GrLevel3 the other.

Once GpsGate detects your GPS and has valid data coming in, you can create two "Virtual COM Ports." These are COM ports driven by software instead of hardware. Your GPS might really be on COM2, but then you can create two virtual COM ports, COM3 and COM4. Then you configure Streets and Trips to use one, like COM3, and GrLevel3 to use the other, COM4. If you have trouble setting this up, the support for GpsGate is the place you need to be. Check out their included help documentation, their website, or their support forums:

-- Download the GPSGate client
-- Pay for a license for GPSGate
-- Install GPSGate and put in the license key
-- Make sure your GPS receiver is still plugged in and is near a window (or in the car) so it can "see" the satellites
-- Run GPSGate
-- Right-click on the GPSGate icon (by Windows clock) and hit "Settings"
-- If everything is running correctly, it should say "Data Coming in OK!"
-- click the "Output" tab
-- under "Add Output" choose "Virtual Com Port" (3rd one down) then hit ADD and add like COM8 COM9 COM10 COM11
-- Open your Streets and Trips software and configure it to use port COM10 for GPS... In my old Streets and trips, it's TOOLS menu, then GPS --> Configure GPS Receiver

In GR, it's File > GPS > Start and then choose COM11 or whatever you want to use

make sure GPSGate is running before you launch your other programs

Good luck!

You forgot the log into GPSgate's website and send a friend request to Spotter Network. It shows SN in Russia comrade.
