• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Garmin VS Tom Tom Go

For those who have used either of these products while out chasing Did you find that they helped you out or did they send you the wrong way? If you had the choice to get either a Garmin or a Tom Tom what brand would you buy and why ?

I have a Garmin Street Pilot 2720 and really like it. Hasn't steered me wrong. Matter of fact, on some of the roads I have been driving my whole life, it showed me better ways to go!
Support is good. Updates come out ever 1-2 years and cost $75 for the update disk.
No problems at all.
Feel free to PM with questions.

I've been using the Garmin GPS map 376c with XM weather and I've not been disappointed with it to date. I'm not familiar with the Tom Tom, but I do like the Garmin unit for chasing purposes.

A lot depends on what models/features you are talking about. I'm not personally interested in models that sit on your dash and only give you driving directions; I much prefer to be able to get an output from it so that I can plug it into other applications as well such as GRlevelX, Oziexplorer etc. As far as I know none of the Tom Tom units can do this, however several Garmin units can depending on the model.

I want something that tells you the road that you are turning on to. Not right turn ahead etc. I have tried out a Tom Tom Go 700 and found it to be lacking this feature . The bluetooth handsfree feature was nice but I found that the directions that it gave me were really lacking . Is there anyway to get it to work with GR or Stormlab ?

Not as far as I know. They are 2 separate systems.
You might be thinking of a satellite system subscription that you can get with the GPS.
My GPS works independent of the GRLevel 2/3 which is a good thing IMHO.
The GPS also announces the street names.

I'll second that. Not had any problems at all...actually better than i hoped for!

I don't beleive so. Like I said earlier most of those "car navigation" type units don't include an NMEA output which is what you need to interface it with a laptop. There are exceptions though; some of the Garmin units can do it and possibly others.

As suggested by Laura above, you might need to consider adding a "puck" type receiver for your GRLevel 3/Stormlab needs if you end up settling on a particular Car Nav model that will not support that use.
