Hey guys,
I've been messing with my Droid (Eris) over the last few months and have been tweaking things to make things run better. I have rooted my phone and flashed new firmware on it (KaosFroyo). Doing these things have made the phone faster and smoother (plus it gives me the option of using my phone as a wifi hotspot - but the phone gets very hot when I do this after a while so I just tether usually using my USB cable). Anyhow, I have also done a couple things that seems to have boosted the signal for me. They are listed and explained below. BTW, do these things at your own risk.
1. Make sure you are running the most updated 'radio' for your phone. Since my firmware is flashed, I won't explain the process here. You can update your Verizon Droid by going into the dial pad and dialing *228 or by bringing your phone into a Verizon store asking them to do it I believe. Just to be clear, the process for a flashed Droid (like I have) is a bit different then this but ultimately the results should be pretty much the same.
2. This I haven't thoroughly tested so please keep this in mind - however, it seems to have helped. Once again, go into your dial pad and enter *#*#4636#*#* - if done correctly it should automatically take you to a new screen. On the screen it brings you to toward the bottom there should be a pull down that likely says 'CDMA Auto'. Change this to 'GSM/CDMA Auto'. At this point I also turned my radio off and then back on by clicking the button below the pull down. Then you can back out of this window by using the back button or clicking your home button. BTW, if this doesn't work simply re-follow the steps and change it back to 'CDMA Auto'...
Thats it, so far my signal seems to be better and my internet while tethered seems to run much quicker. Of course buying hardware is going to boost your signal also...but as far as software goes these things have helped with mine...
BTW, I should mention - I updated my radio several months before I did what is described in step 2. I know it doesn't make much sense but for whatever reason my internet while tethered works much quicker when I change it to 'GSM/CDMA Auto'. I haven't done any speed tests to compare things but visually its not hard to tell its faster for me...
