Dodged the big one, but not the bullet

Watching new video in...also some photos from individuals...and while New Orleans definately dodged the artillery round, I wouldn't say she completely dodged the bullet. The city is still there, but the damage figures in dollar amounts will be record breaking, and the television reports have been mainly from a small area in downtown. Reports on ham radio from areas outside the downtown areas are incredible. Homes with water over the rooftops, total structure failures, and the utility infrastructure has been decimated.

Reports from the MS Gulf Coast on ham radio are even worse.

Looking at the convective burst and rapidly cooling cloud tops that occurred a couple of hours ago, I think Katrina may have been at her weakest when she made landfall. My hunch is that a period of strengthening was imminent if she had more room over the water.
